NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS
5 NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS ENERGY GAS EXCHANGE LIVING SPACE WATER HOMEOSTASIS ENERGY
ENERGY/FOOD Living Organisms need energy to perform all life functions A lion needs energy to chase a zebra A deep sea fish needs energy to create light A human needs energy to play soccer Main source of energy on Earth: Sun Plants get energy from the sun to make food. Animals (including humans!) get energy from the food they eat: Plants Other animals
WATER Living things are made up of water (65- 75%) Need water to: Grow Transport materials Chemical reactions
GAS EXCHANGE Gases are used in chemical reactions, release of waste, respiration. Gases pass through membranes, gills, lungs, cells, etc. Example: Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Important gases that are exchanged are oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and methane.
LIVING SPACE Place or location where an organism meets its needs Has food, water, appropriate climate
HOMEOSTASIS Keeping stable (balanced) internal conditions within the organism Examples: pH level (acid/base) Glucose level (sugar) Oxygen level Temperature Humans- sweat Reptiles- use sun and shade
