“GALACTIC SUITE LTD are developing a space hotel. It’s very normal to think that children, possibly within 15 years could spend a weekend in space.” - Xavier Claramunt, CEO of GALACTIC SUITE LTD -

The Big Question: Is it realistic to holiday in space?

Overview of the Day… Morning: A series of 5 workshops based around the key subject specialisms (History, Science, Maths, Health and Social Care and Media) that students will need to complete the end product of an advertising campaign for space travel and space holidaying. Afternoon: Independent learning time for students within set areas of the school (e.g. the LRC or computer rooms) to complete the assessed task of synthesising all knowledge learnt at the beginning of the day into an advertising campaign to be used for consumers of space travel.

History Workshop In groups students will reflect on the video clip (Virgin Space Flight Campaign) about what it has showed on the development of space travel. They will then be questioned on the reasons why man has traveled previously and what are the reasons now? Looking at the history of the space race and the reasons why the use of space is significant (because it shows a country’s power). E&feature=player_embedded

Science Workshop Students will gain an understanding of Newton’s laws through models and calculation, and be able to relate this to rocketry. This will then be developed further to explore escape velocities. Important factors regarding the construction of rockets will be looked at, eg materials, and their effect on launches explored.

Maths Workshop Students will be asked to consider what needs to be budgeted for when booking a terrestrial holiday. These considerations will then be expanded to a holiday in space and imagining how costings would change. Eg Insurance, fuel costs, accommodation, food etc.

Health & Social Care Workshop Students will actively participate in stimulated ‘space experiences’ e.g. being in a enclosed space Students will then be asked to reflect on their experience, and extend this idea to ‘holidaying’ in space Students will also be provided with a series of images e.g. of a pregnant woman or old person to enable them to consider possible health risks

Media Workshop Students will be taught the practical skills to put together a video product which they will be assessed on at the end of the day. Skills included would be how to use a camera (composition, equipment, recording formats etc.) and how to use editing software (editing techniques, transitions, titles etc.). Audience theories will also be touched upon, relating it back to who the students will be aiming their adverts at and how they will attempt to attract their intended target audience.

Space Travel Advertisement The advertisement will require students to synthesise all knowledge that they have collected in the morning workshops into one final advertisement. Ultimately, it must include information that will appeal to potential space tourists. Each department involved in the day will create report sheets which will assess how much each student has learnt from their department.
