College Eligibility: A general overview of college entrance requirements Presented by Liberty Union High School District Counselors libertyunion.schoolwires.net

College Eligibility Basics  Core College Entrance Subject Requirements  Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA)  Standardized Tests  Alternative Pathways to College

Why A-G? The UC/CSU System needed a consistent and easy way to identify the necessary subject areas needed for college eligibility. There are 15 Core Course Requirements that students must take in order to establish college entrance eligibility. The 15 Core Course meet the minimum subject requirements only.

A – G Minimum Eligibility Subject Requirements 15 Core Classes clustered into 7 categories A.Social Science 2 Core Courses Required B.English 4 Core Courses Required C. Math 3 Consecutive Core Courses Required D.Science 2 Core Courses Required E.Language OTHER than English 2 Consecutive Core Courses Required F.Visual or Performing Art 1 Year Long Core Course Required G.College Prep ELECTIVE 1 Year Long Core Course Not Used to Fulfill the Above Subject Req’s

A – G Core Courses Why are they Important?  The majority of colleges and universities in the United States use the 15 core courses to determine minimum eligibility.  In general a student CANNOT apply to the CSU or UC system with out them.  It is important that every student learns to distinguish between College Eligibility Core Subjects and High School Graduation Core Subjects (District Requirements)  (They are NOT the same!)

How Do Students Choose A-G Core Courses? Course Selection at the School Site in February each year. –Course Catalog and Course Selection Sheet

Where do you find your school’s A-G List?      Course Catalog  Career Center  Counselor

Minimum Requirements versus Recommended Minimum includes only the basics. (15-20 A-G Courses) –Added Value is Necessary for students who only have the minimum core subject requirements met Recommended (21-30 A-G Courses) –Is a “Must Have” for UC’s and Highly Competitive Colleges and Universities –Added Value is still important!

Example A-G List  Each School has their own custom A-G List. No two schools look exactly the same.

Average GPA’s and Test Scores  Average GPA’s for CSU and UC system  (See UC/CSU Handout)  Average GPA’S for Privates  (See Private School Handout)
