Purpose of UTPB Star Internship Program  Provide talented students with challenging opportunities to work on campus  Improve core work place skills: *teamwork * verbal communication * decision making * problem solving * obtaining and processing information * plan/organize & prioritize * analyze quantitative data * increase career knowledge * * increase computer proficiency * create and/or edit written reports * achieve influence/buy in from others  Provide students with customer service training  Enhance student experiential learning opportunities  Provide course articulation opportunities*  Provide students with meaningful skills to note on their resumes  Provide the departments with skilled talent  Provide students with higher than average campus wages  Provide students with presentation skills * Course articulation is optional and must be approved by faculty advisor and course instructor

Student Entrance Requirements  Student must have worked for the department a minimum of six months before students can participate.  Student must agree to participate in the program for a minimum of six months.  Student must first complete customer service orientation in the UTPB Career Center  Student must have faculty advisor and course instructor approval if articulating for academic credit (optional)  Student must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA (cumulative)  Student must be paid a minimum of $9 per hour  Approval of Department Head

Internship Core Requirements  Must complete customer service orientation session in the UTPB Career Center which includes phone etiquette, dress, etiquette, punctuality, interpersonal skills and time management.  Must complete student worker training manual for successor which will include: a) Key terms used by department b) Instructions on step by step processes c) Samples of documents and/or forms used  Must meet the minimum six month requirements  Must present a media driven presentation (Power Point or Prezi) to the department noting what they learned during the internship  No more than 3 absences during the internship

Examples of Work That Can be Incorporated  Expense report preparation  Purchasing requisitions  Budget account reconciliations  Website updates  Create flyers, spreadsheets and graphs  Schedule venues on School Dude  Schedule catering on Catertrax  Prepare check registers  Scan and catalogue documents  Make deposits  Prepare Power Point or Prezi presentations  Create promotional videos  Conduct tours or presentations to students or potential students  Write and publish articles for departmental newsletter  Take pictures of campus events  Create mailing labels  Conduct research  Create advertising campaigns

Additional Things That My Student Worker Has Accomplished  Presented the “women’s” presentation at our Dress for Success seminar  Tabulated results of our job fair satisfaction surveys where she used her statistical knowledge to calculate the mean median and mode  Tabulated results of our salary surveys where she calculated averages and standard deviations: success/career-services/graduate-salary-informationhttp:// success/career-services/graduate-salary-information  Delivered recruitment presentations to high school students

How Do Students Benefit?  All students who complete the UTPB Star Student Internship Program receive a certificate of completion from the UTPB Career Center  Receive a higher than average student wage  Receive customer service training  Gain meaningful experiential learning that articulates with major  Receive formal internship training to note on their resumes

How Do Departments Benefit?  Students who are committed for a sustained duration of time  Top level talent for a minimum cost  Reciprocation of skill sets (teach old dogs new tricks). Things that I have learned from MY student workers: a) How to operate a video camera b) How to upload videos to Youtube and caption them c ) Numerous website best practices using Sitefinity
