United Way Born Learning® Academy Driven by Toyota

History bornlearning ® Academy Developed by Kenton County Schools, Early Childhood Faculty Members from Northern Kentucky University, and United Way of Greater Cincinnati Modeled after the Harlem Children's Zone's "Baby College" in New York. Beechgrove Elementary was selected to pilot the project. It experienced such overwhelming success that Northern Kentucky expanded the project to four other school districts, and the Academy has been highlighted by United Way Worldwide as a best practice.

Concept A school-based Academy (after school) Consists of six session workshops: nutrition, health and sleep; household routines and learning on the go; and relationship-building Provides parents with tools to help their child succeed in kindergarten and beyond. Turning everyday moments into learning opportunities.

Concept Parents of young children prenatal to five are engaged in hands-on activities Hands-on strategies to maximize their child’s early learning and development. School setting allows for parents and children to gain insight and comfort Opportunity for school leaders to get to know the family and their needs All leading to long-standing and positive parent-teacher relationships.

United Way Born Learning® Academy Driven by Toyota Need for a strong commitment by the district and school leadership Participating schools must make a sincere attempt to recruit and build relationships with busy, overwhelmed parents/caregivers. The school is provided with the bornlearning ® Academy materials, training, and pre/post surveys. Each school receives $6,000 grant for Year 1 and a reduced grand for Year 2*

United Way Born Learning® Academy Driven by Toyota Selected schools will be expected to gather pre/post surveys from the school and submit to project manager The Academy is an excellent strategy for schools to reach out and support school readiness. The key to the success of the workshop series is school ownership and effectively leveraging existing resources

Brain growth versus public expenditures on children ages % of public expenditures occur after age five, after 90% of brain development has occurred.

Early Grade Level Reading Campaign: National Focus Every child will read at grade level by 3 rd grade Community mobilization to remove barriers and expand opportunities Assist parents in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities to serve as full partners in the success of their children. GOAL: By 2020 a dozen states or more will increase by at least 100% the number children reading proficiently at the end of third grade.
