Key Points for Today’s Lesson Review last week’s class found in Chapter Study Deuteronomy Before Moses’ death, he issues final instructions and a warning to Israel He directs reading of the law every seven years This warning takes the form of a song that all Israelites were to learn Moses blesses the tribes of Israel Moses dies at Mount Nebo and Joshua becomes leader of Israel

Last Week’s Class Studied Deuteronomy Learned about Moses third address to the Israelites and his appeal for them to remain faithful Learned about the possibility of restoration for future generations of Israelites Learned about the importance of obedience Israelites were to understand that the key decision is good versus evil, to love God or not love God

Pentateuch In Context Man can experience God’s blessing through trust and obedience Genesis – man is a finite creature made in the image of God, fallen in sin, unable on his own to enjoy a relationship that God Exodus – human sin leads to enslavement Leviticus – reveals more fully that man is a sinner and that he is different and separate from God Numbers – shows redeemed sinners enjoying the benefits of atonement but fall away Deuteronomy – God loves us, we should love God

Historical Background Title in Hebrew is ‘elleh haddebarim – meaning “these are the words” English title Deuteronomy means “second law” in Greek – However, it isn’t a second law, it merely restates/explains the law as Moses already given Written around 1406 BC, shortly before Moses dies on the plains of Moab Written by Moses – See 1:5, 9; 5:1; 27:1, 8; 1 Ki 2:3; Matt 19:7-8; Acts 7:37-38; Rom 10:19

Historical Background Continued Contains primarily history and instructions and is similar to Leviticus –Preached, not taught All events take place across the Jordan river from Jericho on the plains of Moab Within a few weeks prior to Israel’s entrance into Canaan

Hebrew Calendar

Geographical Background Israelites traveled from Mt. Sinai to the plains of Moab – East of Jericho and the Jordan River However, not a direct route – Proceeded from Sinai to Kadesh Barnea – On Canaan’s southern border Failed to proceed to the Promised Land from Kadesh Barnea because of unbelief – Wondered 38 more years in the wilderness God finally brings them back to Kadesh, then led them to the Plains of Moab on Canaan’s eastern border Book of Numbers picks up in the final days leading up to Israel’s crossing of the Jordan river as outlined in the book of Joshua

Moses was limited in his actions by God’s command (vs. 1-2) – Even at 120, he could still accomplish what got allows – He would not enter the Promised Land (Num 20:12) Challenge to the people of Israel (vs. 3-6) – Be strong and courageous, do not fear Moses’ challenge to Joshua (vs. 7-8) – God was going to use Joshua and he must remain strong and courageous as well Challenge to the priests (vs. 9-13) – Read the law to the people every seven years Moses’ Challenge (31:1-13)

Preface to Joshua’s anointing as leader of Israel (vs ) – God selects Joshua to succeed Moses – To be presented at the tabernacle of meetings (read about Joshua and the tabernacle in Ex 33:11) A song of Moses meant to warn Israel of future apostasy (vs ) Joshua is anointed as the leader (vs. 23) Moses orders the book of the law to be placed beside the ark of the covenant (vs ) Moses gathers all the leaders (vs ) Legacy of Moses (31:14-30)

Moses recites his song to the leaders (vs. 1-4) – A future prophesy The children forsake their father (vs. 5-6) Asked to remember God’s faithfulness (vs. 7-14) Israel responded with apostasy (vs ) God punishes Israel (vs ) God’s plea to Israel (vs ) Moses encourages Israel (vs ) God’s final command to Moses (vs ) – Go to Mount Nebo, view the land, and then die Text (32:1-52)

Moses blesses the children of Israel (vs. 1) – Similar to Jacob in Genesis 49 Glory of God’s revelation to Israel (vs. 2-5) – Moses begins by presenting God. – God is pictured as the source of all blessing in the figure of the sun rising on His people at Sinai – The sun is the source of physical blessing – Seir refers to the mountain range in Edom over which the sun would apparently rise as seen from Sinai – Paran refers to the mountains near Kadesh Barnea that separated the Sinai wilderness from Canaan Blessing of the Tribes (33:1-5)

Moses issues blessings beginning with Reuben (vs. 6) Then to Judah and Levi (vs. 7-11) Benjamin and Joseph (vs ) Zebulun, Issachar, and Gad (vs 18-21) Dan was called a lion’s whelp (vs 22) – Dan was a very troublesome tribe later in the OT Naphtali and Asher (vs ) Conclusion (vs ) – The eternal God is your refuge Individual Tribal Blessings (33:6-29)

Moses travels to Mount Nebo – Saw the Promised Land (vs. 1-3) God’s last words to Moses (vs. 4) – This is the land the He swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob Death of Moses (vs. 5-8) – In the land of Moab – Buried – in the valley, opposite of Beth Peor Joshua becomes the leader of Israel (vs. 9) Legacy of Moses – none like him (vs ) Death of Moses (34:1-12)

Key Lessons Of Deuteronomy God desires to bless people through a relationship with Him This blessing can be experience through trust and obedience We as the sinner redeemed are servants of God our master God loves people and we should love God God manifested His love for Israel through laws Israel demonstrated love by obeying these laws

Review Studied Deuteronomy Before Moses’ death, he issues final instructions and a warning to Israel He directs reading of the law every seven years This warning takes the form of a song that all Israelites were to learn Moses blesses the tribes of Israel Moses dies at Mount Nebo and Joshua becomes leader of Israel Next week - Auditorium Next fall – Joshua
