Studying a series on the “Titles of God” Studied 4 titles so far. 1. Jehovah Jireh – Gen Jehovah Raphael – Ex Jehovah Nissi – Ex Jehovah Shalom – Judges 6 Today we are studying another Title of God. - “Jehovah Sabaoth” Each title revealed God’s intervention in their lives when they were experiencing crisis.

The Hebrew for "host" is Tsaba used ~ 486x with most uses having something to do with: 1. warfare, In general, "Host" can describe: (1) a multitude of men (army) – Ex 7:4 (2) heavenly creatures – Josh 5:14 (3) physical stars (celestial bodies) – Deut 4:19 Jehovah Sabaoth can be translated as: "The Lord of Armies." This name denotes His universal sovereignty over every army, both spiritual and earthly. 3. or fighting. 2. armies Zech – 37XMalachi – 23XNT – 2X

1 st mentioned Joshua 5: nd 1 Sam 17 – David and Goliath 3 rd mentioned 2kg 6 – Elijah and his servants 4 th Mentioned Amos 5:14 INTRODUCTION Israel had just crossed the River Jordan. The generation that were circumcised has perish in the wilderness because of unbelief. This new generation preparing to possess the Promise land had not been circumcised. God commanded Joshua to circumcised them.

V5 – Abrahamic Covenant The names of God and titles of God are God’s covenant names and titles to Israel. Circumcision was the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant. If they were not circumcised, then God’s Covenant Title cannot be Israel’s reality. It is now four days after the crossing. The newly circumcised generation has now recovered. KEY 1 Obedience

Verse 12 -God’s provision of Manna has now ceased. They were now eating of the fruits of Canaan. Verse 13 – Joshua was by Jericho. 1. Joshua has obeyed God by commanding Israel to be circumcised. 2. Joshua has obeyed God by keeping the Passover. Now Joshua was preparing a military campaign against the nations of the promised land. He lift up his eyes and saw a man. He was not seeing a vision. Joshua went to him.

V13 Has a sword drawn in his hand. Joshua asked him a question. “Are you for a us, or for our adversary” What was the response? He said “No’ and called himself as the “captain of the host of the Lord” and I am come to you “Captain of the host of the Lord = Jehovah Sabaoth” V14 – How did Joshua response? 1.fell on his face – submission, honor 2.worship 3. Called him, lord

Joshua realized that it was the Lord. This is another appearance of "Christophany" (pre incarnate appearance of the Messiah). Sometimes we refer to this as Theophany. Verse 15 - How did the Lord response? 1. Loose thy shoes – meaning:  submission  honor  reverent 2. How did Joshua response?  He obeyed.

Spies have surveyed the city of Jericho. Report revealed Jericho was impregnable. Realistically an impossible task because of the massive fortification. Correct assumption - Joshua probably praying and seeking God. Prayer is always a good place to begin when confronted with challenges. The Lord promised those who seek Him will find Him.

Captain of the host of the Lord “Jehovah Sabaoth” appeared to Joshua as he was preparing for war giving Joshua:  guidance As Joshua prepare for war, he needed: God’s presence God’s power In this critical crisis, Joshua had a revelation of Jehovah Sabaoth. This revelation gave him the:  courage God provision God’s strategy  and instruction  confidence

Joshua understood Jehovah Sabaoth will: 1. lead them. 3. assured or guaranteed victory. Conclusion In Rom 15:4 and 1 Co 10:11 clearly instructs Believers that what was written in the OT was written for our: 1. learning 2. admonition 2. Planned strategy 1. Wilderness journey 2. Possessing the Promise land Type of Christian journey
