2011 SONC Fall Tournament Volunteer Training Presentation

Thank you for volunteering! Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Thanks to your willingness to volunteer for this event, nearly 900 athletes and Unified Partners will get to enjoy competition in the following sports: cycling, golf, roller skating, soccer and tennis!

Venues Below is a listing of the venues being used and the sports/events associated with them: ShowPlace: Dinner, Family Dinner, Victory Dance and Olympic Town. Piedmont Triad Centre: Competition in cycling. Oak Hollow Golf Course: Competition in golf. Skate South: Competition in roller skating. High Point Athletic Complex: Competition in soccer skills and soccer team. High Point Tennis Center: Competition in tennis. Directions to all venues available at

General Information Volunteer shifts are ALL DAY. Lunch will be provided at all venues on Saturday. –On Sunday, lunch will be provided for those volunteers working at cycling and golf. Cycling and golf volunteers will receive meal tickets at check-in. All venues will be clearly marked with signs denoting where to park, where volunteer check-in is located, etc.

General Information Upon arrival at your venue, you should report to the volunteer manager to get your assignment (see next slide for names of volunteer managers at each venue) If inclement weather should become a factor, please call , option 2 to receive an update on any changes to the competition schedule. Please notify SONC by or phone if you discover you cannot make your scheduled volunteer shift. If at all possible, we ask that you find a replacement for your volunteer commitment.

Everyone loves a t-Shirt! Your volunteer t-shirt let’s everyone know you’re here to help! SONC provides you with a volunteer t-shirt that you must wear at all times while volunteering! You’ll receive your t- shirt upon checking in for your volunteer shift.

Now let’s get you trained! The next few slides will give you an idea of your volunteer role for the weekend. Your specific job will be assigned when you arrive. Volunteers will work in one of the following functional areas…

Competition Volunteers signed up as competition assistants will likely be assigned to do one of the following jobs: Timer – timing races Staging – helping group athletes about to compete or who have just competed Athlete Escort – assisting athletes to and from the competition area and awards

Human Resources Volunteers signed up to assist with human resources will be assigned to do: Volunteer Check-in – assist with checking in volunteers and athletes

Support Services Volunteers signed up to work in support services will likely be assigned to do one of the following jobs: Access Control – assist with making sure only properly credentialed athletes and coaches enter the competition area; assist with parking and crowd control Meal Operations – helping deliver, serve, or distribute meals to athletes, coaches and volunteers

Awards Volunteers signed up to help with awards will likely be assigned to do one of the following jobs: Staging – assist with getting athletes/teams in proper order for medaling purposes Awards Assistant – organize medals and ribbons in order to present to athletes Awards Presenter – assist with the actual presentation of medals and ribbons for athletes

Power Team Another important volunteer position with support services is the Power Team! These volunteers assist with: setting up and breaking down equipment keeping water coolers filled assisting with meal distribution lifting the heavy stuff!

Rules & Regulations Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Volunteers are required to show a valid photo ID upon checking in to volunteer. Smoking is not permitted at any SONC competition venue. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is not allowed at any SONC competition. Only properly credentialed athletes, coaches and volunteers are allowed in competition areas. If a medical emergency should arise, please notify the medical personnel on hand immediately. But we’ve got young children who want to volunteer! VOLUNTEER TO CHEER!! The chief responsibility of a SONC Spirit Squad is to yell and scream your support for each and every athlete competing! Spirit Squad can be a group of any age – so those under 14 can be involved! All Spirit Squad members receive a Spirit Team t-shirt.
