Tessellations with Regular Polygons.  Many regular polygons or combinations of regular polygons appear in nature and architecture.  Floor Designs 
A tessellation (or tiling) is a special type of pattern that consists of geometric figures that fit without gaps or overlaps to cover the plane.

 Islam prohibited drawing natural figures, therefore they drew geometric designs.

 If you want to make a mosaic you have to fill the wall with a repetition or figures.  You can find the best mosaics at The Alhambra in Granada.

It’s very easy to design mosaics with regular poligons. For example:  Squares  Equilateral triangules  Hexagons

 The arabs became the best al creating unique figures.  These are the three most common and easy to design figures: - The bone - The plane - The crane

The basic shape:

The shape starts as a square. And the final result is a shape with the same area but shaped like a bone.

Detail

The basic shape

The shape starts as a square. And the final result is a shape with the same area but shaped like a plane.

The basic shape:

The shape starts as a equilateral triangule. And the final result is a shape with the same area but shaped like a crane.

Necessary materials  A T-shirt.  Adhesive elbow pads in different colors  Exacto-knife or scissors  A pencil, a ruler, an eraser,…  A model of the mosaic that you are going to construct  An iron to attach the elbow pads on the t-shirt
