Lesson 3: Talking about Occupations, Continuing Conversations

Review: Jazz Chant Sally speaks Spanish, but not very well. When she tries to speak Spanish, you really can’t tell what language she’s speaking or trying to speak. The first time I heard her, I thought it was Greek.

The rest of the group must take turns asking closed questions until the group discovers what it is, or up to 20 questions. The person may only answer by saying “yes” or “no”. Example Questions: * Is it a living thing? A nonliving thing? * Is it bigger than a car? Smaller than an apple? * Is it red? Black? Multi-colored? * Can it be eaten? * Is it made of paper? Stone? * Is it used by students? Doctors? * Is it used in a school? Hospital? * Is there one in this classroom?

Homework Check: Names of Occupations and Jobs You were supposed to write down the names of as many occupations and jobs as you could think of. Brainstorm (share ideas quickly with the class): Write down only the occupations/jobs that you don’t have.

Asking about someone’s occupation (or field of study) What do you do? What line of work are you in? Where do you work? What are you studying? What’s your major? Where do you go to school? What classes are you taking?

Saying something about the situation in which you meet the other person Great party, isn’t it? Interesting play, isn’t it? Wonderful concert, isn’t it? It’s a lovely wedding, isn’t it? Nice picnic, isn’t it? Exciting football game, isn’t it?

Practice: Continuing Conversations Each person will receive a card with the following information on it: - A phrase about the weather or the situation - A name - Occupation or field of study Using the information, you will have 30 seconds to start a conversation, introduce yourself and what you do with another person. After 30 seconds, you will exchange cards and change partners
