What is Bullying? According to the Indiana Law, bullying is defined as overt and unwanted repeated acts, including verbal or written communications by phone or cyber bullying that create a hostile school environment for targeted students that place them in fear or harm which then affects their school performance, or in severe cases their mental health. “Emotional Intelligence and the Target”

Why is Bullying Important to Address? In Marion County alone there are 168,745 students enrolled out of those approximately 42,186 are being bullied. Out of those 42,186 students 13 will commit or have committed suicide do to bullying. 3.2 million students are victims each year 160,000 teens skip school each day because of bullying 1 in 4 teachers do nothing about bullying More than 9,000 bullying incidents were reported by Indiana’s Public Schools for the 2013-2014 school year. There is a concern that not all schools even bother reporting bullying incidents because the school doesn’t want to “look bad.” “Stop Bulling”

Who is affected by Bullying? Anyone can be bullied no certain factor determines whether or not a kid gets bullied. Many signs can indicate whether or not someone is being affected by bullying. It can impact mental health, substance use, and suicide thoughts. Children at Risk of Being Bullied: are weak, have low self-esteem, have few friends. Children More Likely to Bully Others: well- connected with peers, concerned about popularity. Signs a child is being bullied: unexplainable injuries, destroyed clothing, changes in eating habits, headaches, declining grades, difficulty sleeping, and decreased self- esteem. “Bullying Victims Suffer Effects Far Beyond Childhood”

What is Cyber Bullying? Many people do not realize that do to the advanced technology cyber bullying is a real problem, more often occurring in the later adolescence stage. Examples of cyber bullying include; mean text messages, making fun of someone on a social network site and harsh comments on social media. 16% of teenagers confessed to being bullied on social media last year. Many schools do not have programs set up to prevent cyber bullying, including our own. “Police taking aim at cyberbullying in Montana”

How Do We Stop Cyber Bullying? A way we can prevent Cyber Bullying is by having the schools of Southern Hancock County promote the STOP!T app. After your school administrator makes your school an account, you can download the app on your mobile device. You can then report cyber bullying by taking screenshots of the online crimes you see and report them to your school or parent anonymously.
