MICS4 Survey Design Workshop Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys Survey Design Workshop Questionnaire for Individual Women: Post-natal health check module

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop Background The mortality risks for both mother and newborn are highest during the first couple of days after birth. Requests from within UNICEF as well as the from wider international development community for standardized data on post-natal care contacts for mother and baby. This module was developed by the global MICS programme in collaboration with other development partners.

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop Measures contact with a provider not content of care. Focus of data collection on PNC visit: –In the case of facility deliveries contact occurring after discharge. –In the case of home deliveries, the focus will be on any contact with a care provider after the TBA/birth attendant leaves the home. Note that structure of module allows for addition of questions on content, if desired. Overview of module

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop Women of reproductive age (15-49 years) Live birth in the two years preceding interview Eligibility

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop MICS Indicators PN.1 Post-partum stay in health facility Numerator: Number of women age years who stayed in the health facility for 12 hours or more after the delivery of their last live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey Denominator:Total number of women age years with a live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop MICS Indicators PN.2 Post-natal health check for the newborn Numerator: Number of last live births in the last 2 years who received a post-natal health check from any provider within 2 days after birth Denominator: Total number of last live births in the last 2 years

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop MICS Indicators PN.3 Post-natal health check for the mother Numerator: Number of women age years who received a post-natal health check from any provider within 2 days after their last live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey Denominator: Total number of women age years with a live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop PN.2 Post-natal health check for the newborn Facility births

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop PN.2 Post-natal health check for the newborn Home births with attendant

MICS4 Survey Design Workshop Methodological issues New module and not a lot of experience yet. Module will require careful training and practice due to lots of skip patterns. This new approach should allow for more precise measurement of PNC visits (versus intrapartum or immediate postnatal care).
