Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys MICS3 Regional Training Workshop Additional Household Characteristics

Use of questions on household characteristics Assets owned by household, dwelling material, crowding can be used to construct the wealth index and other indices of wealth/socioeconomic status The assets in household questionnaire constitute a minimum set for constructing the wealth index

Use of questions on household characteristics Information on possession of household assets, dwelling materials, water and sanitation, crowding are used in principal components analysis and households are categorized into quintiles of wealth In addition, we have some further questions/recommendations for increasing the explanatory power of the wealth index

Optional questions to add Optional questions to add: –Ownership of land for agriculture (HC11, HC12) –Ownership of livestock (HC13, HC14) –Addition of items of furniture to HC9 –Addition of more household appliances, for high, middle and low income households –May add country-specific animals (pigs, ducks etc)
