Sexual behaviour Additional module for inclusion in countries where HIV/AIDS is a potential concern (includes MDG indicator 19a) Womens questionnaire (ages 15-24)

Purpose To measure behaviour among young people that puts them at increased risk to HIV infection

Indicators Age at first sex –Proportion of young women who had sex before age 15 High risk sex in prior 12 months –Proportion of young women who had sex with a non-cohabiting partner Condom use at last high risk sex –Proportion of young women who used a condom the last time they had sex with a non- cohabiting partner Age-mixing: –Proportion of young women who had sex with a man at least 10 years older

Methodological issues Interviews must be conducted in private Interviewer must assure respondent that answers are completely confidential Rapport must be developed between interviewer and respondent Interviewer must avoid showing judgment toward respondent All above items will be stressed in interviewer guide

Questions Position of this module is important! Sexual behavior module should be asked after contraception module so rapport is built but before HIV module to avoid biasing responses Sexual behavior module is only asked to young women ages 15-24
