Yosemite Mathematics Unit 1 Overview

Yosemite Not just a great valley, but a shrine to human foresight, the strength of granite, the power of glaciers, the persistence of life, and the tranquility of the High Sierra. First protected in 1864, Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.

Unit 1Numbers & Operations Numbers and Operations Base Ten  I Can Use Number Sense and Place Value to Help Me Understand Math  I can round numbers to the nearest ten or NBT.1  I can add and subtract numbers within NBT.2 Measurement and Data  I can create a picture or bar graph to show data and solve problems using the information from the graphs. 3.MD.3

Unit Task 1  You will study the temperatures throughout the year in Yosemite.  You will round temperatures and draw conclusions.  You will graph the temperatures.

Unit Task 2  You will estimate and then determine how many bear incidents there are each year in Yosemite.  You will determine the amount of monetary damage the bears cause.

Bears  Bear problems Bear problems (This video has no audio.)

Unit Task 3  You will read about Yosemite’s amazing waterfalls.  You will record data and then compare and contrast the information.  You will solve math problems to show you know how to add, subtract, and round numbers. Yosemite’s Waterfalls
