In the movie, Andy Dufresne, after being found guilty of murdering his adulterous wife and her lover, is given two life sentences in Shawshank State Prison. Over the course of 19 years, he secretly tunnels his way out of the prison, emerging from a sewer pipe into a flooded ditch. As rain from a violent storm beats down upon him, the sewage he crawled through to freedom is literally rinsed away. Symbolically, Andy’s sin is being rinsed away, and his soul cleansed.
