THESIS STATEMENT This is the controlling idea of your paper It should outline the structure of your paper In the film Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses _______________ and _______________ to _____________________________________. Cinematic Technique #1 Cinematic Technique #2 how the techniques affect the meaning of film (purpose)

Structure of THE BODY PARAGRAPH Analytical Claim Example from the film Commentary Transition…Similarly, Furthermore, Also, Later on Sentence of Closure

EXAMPLE OF A BODY PARAGRAPH Tim Burton (The director) uses specific camera movements in order to capture important moments. When Willy Wonka opens the door to the edible room, the camera zooms in. This increases the excitement and anticipation. By moving in, the viewer feels like they are in the room with the characters. Similarly, he zooms in towards the door, and when it swings open, the perspective switches to a boom/crane view of the room. By using an overhead shot the whole room is shown which demonstrates the beauty and wonderment of the setting. Viewers see the chocolate waterfall and all of the other fantastic aspects of the room. The camera movements in the film demonstrate specific choices that the director made to convey his vision in the film.

CONCLUSION Summarize what you said about Tim Burton’s style in your essay; Address the significance of analyzing a filmmaker’s or any artist’s style Why did we take the time to do this in class?
