Year 10 Film Test Answers 2010

Part A: 1.1. Dialogue 2.Medium shot 3.Fade 4.Cut 5.High Key lighting 6.Voiceover 7.Eye level shot 8.Pan 9.Establishing shot 10.Close-up Achieved = 5-6 correct Merit = 7-8 correct Excellence = 9-10 correct

Part B 1.Long shot (A)– helps show the character in his/her environment, gives you an understanding of where events are set. Shows the alien is alone in the desert (M) 2.Over the shoulder shot (A) – Helps viewers see what a character is looking at from their perspective. The alien is watching the van zoom off into the distance (M) 3.Extreme close-up (A) – Focuses viewers on a particular detail, the plane has run out of petrol/oil (M)

Part B 4. As the alien jumps from the plane the music gets faster because he is in danger (A – must have some appreciation of mood/tension). The music changes when the parachute opens. It becomes slower and softer. (M – must describe the two ways music is used and some appreciation of mood/tension). The music as the parachute opens is slower and softer to show that the alien is now safe and reflects the peacefulness of his surroundings. (E – must describe the two ways music is used and two ways music creates mood/tension) 5. Low Key lighting (A). The dark shadows as the alien enters the house makes it look scary. (M – must show an appreciation of atmosphere). The lighting implies that the house is a dangerous place for the alien and that he might be under some kind of threat if caught. (E - Further explanation of atmosphere needed, must link to the idea of the alien being under threat not just a mention of the house/environment )

Part B 6. High Angle (A). Makes the alien look weak or helpless (M) 7. Point of View Shot (A). Shows the aliens perspective or what he sees as he escapes down the drain. Viewers are able to see through his eyes (M) 8. Zoom/Zoom out (A). Allows viewers to slowly see more of the environment and gives a larger picture (M) 9. Extreme Close-up (A). Focuses audience attention on a specific detail – the girl alien is in love with the alien on Earth (M) 10. Close-up (A) Helps show facial expressions or emotion. (M)

Part B 11. The aliens are blue and pink (A). The colours are used to represent that one is male and one is female (M – must comment on the symbolic meaning behind the colour choice) 12. The reason for the alien’s visit to Earth is to make pictures in the grass/crops. (A – must have some mention of the pattern in the grass/crops.) The alien is making these pictures to impress his girlfriend (M – must mention that they are for his alien girlfriend) Crop circles are unexplained patterns which appear in farmers fields. The film implies that the reason behind the alien’s visit to earth is to create crop circles to impress his girlfriend back on his home planet - she is watching him on Earth and obviously likes these works of art he is creating for her (E – must have appreciation of what crop circles are and that they are ‘created’ for his girlfriend) Overall: Achieved = 7A Merit = 5M + 2A Excellence = 2E + 3M + 2A
