 A reaction to an allergen…  A person can be triggered by an allergen through touch, inhaling, or eating.  When triggered by an allergen, the immune system creates antibodies.  The body will release chemicals to protect itself. It is these chemicals that cause the reaction.

 Skin- hives, redness swelling of appendages and face  Intestinal tract- nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain  Respiratory tract- drippy nose, sneezing, coughing, loss of breath  Cardiovascular system- fainting or lightheadedness

 Milk  Eggs  Peanuts  Soy  Wheat  Tree Nuts  Fish  Shell Fish

 ALL domestic and imported packaged food MUST be labeled if it contains one of the top 8 allergens  Those who are very sensitive to allergens BEWARE manufacturers are not required to print if it came into contact with an allergen during processing and cross-contamination does occur!  Things that are NOT labeled…  Fresh Produce  Fresh Meat  Highly refined Oils

 Many people who think they have food allergies actually don’t.  About 30% of the population believes they have food allergies.  Food intolerance is when one has a reaction to food but it is not an allergy. Allergies are involved with the immune system.

 Have your child's doctor provide clear instructions on how to treat an allergic reaction through a Food Allergy Action Plan(FAAP)  The FAAP will provide your child’s school with information to quickly evaluate and treat an allergic reaction.  In absence of your presence teach all those who care for your child the correct way to use an epinephrine auto-injector.

 When evaluating for a food allergy, an allergist determines a number a factors including: A detailed history, prick skin test, and test for foods that a patient has never knowingly eaten or is eating without obvious problems.  If a person receives a negative test it is a reassurance that the food can be digested safely.  A positive prick skin test to egg or milk simply indicates that a person has LgE antibodies to milk or egg. A patient is sensitized to milk or eggs.

Wear a bracelet or necklace stating you have food allergies incase of an emergency lose consciousness. Carry around little bag with EpiPen, Benadryl, and any other prescribed medication from your doctor. Ask your waiter questions about how the food is prepared.
