SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES IMPROVEMENT PLAN Linda M. Kauffman RN District School Nurse Supervisor October 20, 2009

Challenges and Accomplishments Two new school nurses joined our team and needed to be oriented. One at the high school level and one at the elementary level. Facilitated a one on one orientation program, during the first two weeks of school, that was tailored to meet the needs of the individual nurses. 2. Provided mentor support throughout the remainder of the school year.

Five different schools with 5 similar but not exactly consistent approaches to health service delivery. Established regular nursing department meetings with a set agenda and follow up meeting minutes to align delivery of consistent health services in our district schools. 2. Reviewed and established procedures for consistent delivery of health services.

Determined that there was an inconsistent approach involving communication of students with interscholastic sports injuries. Very often, parents were unclear about the procedure for reporting a student injury. Health services worked with the athletic director to establish a procedure for sports related injuries that would be used by all coaches at the middle school and high school. 2. All parent handbooks were updated to provide consistent information to parents.

Worked with information provided by the CDC and State of Connecticut Department of Public Health to establish guidelines for illness monitoring and prevention. 2. Communicated information to parents on a regular basis. 3. Provided hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette instruction at all levels.

(Installation of those machines will be complete by the end of this week.) 2. The district nursing supervisor will become a CPR/AED trainer so that we can facilitate the in-house training of teams in each building. (The ultimate goal will be for all staff to be trained.) Note: The nursing supervisor became certified to teach in September.
