Slide 32 Cyberbullying and Prevention

Slide 33 What is cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented threatened harassed humiliated embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones.

Slide 34 Prevention Ultimately, theres no one size fits all solution. Whats the schools role in this? Whats the parents role in this?

Slide 35 What is the schools role? When schools try and get involved by disciplining the student for cyberbullying actions that took place off-campus and outside of school hours, they are often sued for exceeding their authority and violating the student's free speech right. They also, often lose.

Slide 36 What are schools doing?

Slide 37 Why Kids Avoid Telling Parents They fear they (parents) will only make things worse. Calling the other parents Calling the school Blaming the victim (their own child) Taking away internet privileges

Slide 38 Parents Role Be supportive of your child. Let the school know whats going on. They can be on the look out for in-school bullying. Make your child feel secure. Understand that your child is just as likely to be a cyberbully as a victim of cyberbullying. Role often goes back and forth.

Slide 39

Slide 40 Tips for Parents From Facebook 1.It can be tough to keep up with technology. Dont be afraid to ask your kids to explain it to you. 2.If you're not already on Facebook, consider joining. That way you'll understand what it's all about! 3.Create a Facebook group for your family so you will have a private space to share photos and keep in touch. 4.Teach your teens the online safety basics so they can keep their Facebook profile (and other online accounts) private and safe. 5.Talk about technology safety just like you talk about safety while driving and playing sports.

Slide 41 Additional Tips Remind your child that once information is posted online, they cant take it back. Even if its deleted! Know how your kids are getting online. Discuss what information should always remain private. Social security number Street address Phone number Financial information

Slide 42 Conversation Starters From Facebook 1.Do you feel like you can tell me if you ever have a problem at school or online? 2.Help me understand why Facebook is important to you. 3.Can you help me set up a Facebook profile? 4.Who are your friends on Facebook? 5.I want to be your friend on Facebook. Would that be OK with you? What would make it OK?
