Historical perspective Time period A Time for Choosing was performed on October 27, The speech was used to support Berry Goldwater, a republican candidate. This was one of the greatest speeches performed for support of a presidential candidate

Historical perspective Purpose/Occasion He Wanted to support the republican candidate, Gary Goldwater. He needed to Explain how Americans are loosing their freedom. Stress that America needed to form a smaller government. Show republican ideals in a positive light. Explain how democrats were ruining America.

Theme Ronald Reagan wanted America to look at the country as a whole and understand the problems that are going on. America viewed the republicans too harsh in the 1960s. He wanted the Americans not to jump to quick decisions while voting without understanding the plans of his party.

Impact Allowed Reagan to be recognized as one of the greatest speakers Boosted Reagan’s chances of being elected as a President Raised 1 million dollars for Goldwater’s campaign Gave a clear view of the Republican’s plans

Key points “The sponsor has been identified, but unlike most telivison programs, the performer hasn’t been provided with a script.” Through this quote Reagan starts the speech showing he is sponsoring Berry Goldwater, but he is not restricted to him. This is show when Reagan explains his own views on situation and barely mentions Berry’s name throughout the speech.

Key points “Senator Humphrey last week claimed Gary Goldwater, as President, would seek to eliminate farmers. Well, he should do his homework a little better.” Ronald Reagan is putting the Democratic party in the negative light through this quote. At the same time he is supporting Berry Goldwater and later explains why Humphrey is wrong.

Key points “We have so many people who cant see a fat man standing beside a thin one without coming to a conclusion that the fat man got that way by taking advantage of the smaller one.” Ronald Reagan is trying to explain how to American people are being taken advantage of by their government. He explains throughout the speech how they are causing economic problems, and He stresses that the Americans need justice.

Key points “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.” This quote is showing how America will choose what path to take in the election. “We’ll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.” Reagan is saying how the Americans’ choice will either benefit the future or destroy it.

“ We’ll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.” – Ronald Reagan

You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, "There is a price we will not pay." "There is a point beyond which they must not advance." And this -- this is the meaning in the phrase of Barry Goldwater's "peace through strength." Winston Churchill said, "The destiny of man is not measured by material computations. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we're spirits -- not animals." And he said, "There's something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty.“ You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We'll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we'll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness. We will keep in mind and remember that Barry Goldwater has faith in us. He has faith that you and I have the ability and the dignity and the right to make our own decisions and determine our own destiny. Thank you very much.

Bonus Persuasive Appeals to reason “We've raised our debt limit three times in the last twelve months, and now our national debt is one and a half times bigger than all the combined debts of all the nations of the world.” Reagan is explaining the current situation America is in and is using stats. Persuassive Appeals to emotion “I wonder who among us would like to approach the wife or mother whose husband or son has died in South Vietnam and ask them if they think this is a peace that should be maintained indefinitely.” ”There can be no real peace while one American is dying some place in the world for the rest of us.” Reagan is using the soldiers dying in Vietnam to appeal to emotion.

Bonus Rhetorical Questions- “Do they believe that poverty is going to suddenly disapear by magic?” “ Should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in Slavery under pharrohs?” “Should Christ have refused the Cross?”
