The City Of Ember Background Builder By Justin Hatch

Electricity In the 1800’s an English scientist Humphry Davy made the first electric light with an electric battery and a piece of carbon. The carbon glowed producing light. Much later Thomas Edison experimented thousands of times with different types of filaments. He finally found one that would work. He made one that would burn for 40 hours, then one that would glow for 1500 hours. In time, many people worked on it and it was greatly improved.

Food Rationing In the U.K. during W.W. ll The Germans destroyed the cargo ships transporting food supplies to the US and the UK. The people had to survive on little food. A man named Winston Churchill made a big change. He came up with the idea of food rationing. He got the prices of goods down where they were supposed to be. He made it so that everyone had enough food.

Relating this to the City Of Ember I researched two topics that I think relate to this book. The light bulb relates to Ember because the people of Ember rely on them for light. The people of Ember need them a lot, and so do we. The second thing that relates to Ember is the food rationing. The people of Ember were running out of food. This relates to World War II. They were both going hungry and it was a major problem.
