Nutrition Chapter 5 Lesson 1

Objectives Be able to define nutrition and calories Know the difference between hunger and appetite Understand the role of emotions on food choices Determine the % of calories that come from fat

Key ideas Nutrition – the process in which the body takes in & uses food Calories – units of heat that measure the energy used by the body & the energy that foods supply to the body

Nutrition Nutrients - substances in food that your body needs to: –Grow –Repair –Supply you with energy Hunger – an unlearned, inborn response that is a natural physical drive that protects us from starvation –When your stomach is empty the walls contract stimulating nerve endings that send a message to your brain telling you that you are hungry Appetite – desire rather than the need to eat

Food & your Emotions What emotions cause us to eat? –Sadness –Boredom –Happiness Why?

Food & your Environment Environmental factors that influence food choices: –Family, friends, peers –Cultural & ethnic background –Convenience & cost –Advertising **Nutrition is essential throughout life but especially during adolescent years**

The Food Label Calories per gram: –Carbohydrates = 4 calories –Proteins = 4 calories –Fat = 9 calories

% of calories derived from fat [(grams of fat * 9)/(total calories)] * 100 Ex: [(1.5 * 9)/(60)] * 100 [(13.5)/(60)] * 100 [.225] * %
