INTRO In this social studies unit, you will learn about different cultures, environments, people, and ways of life. It is important for you to understand that no two people are the same, and there are many different ways throughout the world to live, speak, eat, talk, and no two people look the same. While we must embrace differences, we must also stand up and show others who we are as well.

SECTION 1 – WHAT IS DIVERSITY? An important part of understanding diversity is understanding who you are. Diversity – the act of accepting that everyone is different, respecting, and embracing these differences These key terms are all a part of what makes you who you are. In this section, we will take a closer look at these key terms. Culture Ethnic Group Race Class

CULTURE Culture –the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc. Take a look at the image to the left. These are all different things that represent someone’s culture.

ETHNIC GROUP Ethnic Group – pertaining to or characteristic of a people, especially a group sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.

RACE Race – a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.

CLASS Class – a group of persons sharing a similar social position and certain economic, political, and cultural characteristics

REVIEW There are so many different ways to be a diverse individual. While people are all trying to fit it, it is very important to remember to stand up for who you are and what you believe in! SKIN COLOR Some skin colors are light, dark, red, white, black, yellow, and that’s ok!

HAIR There are MANY different colors of hair that we all have! Look at some of the colors below! Your hair can be short, long, wavy, straight, or curly!

EYES Everyone’s eyes are different colors and shapes!

HEIGHT Some of us are tall, and some of us are short! There is a wide range in between!

SECTION 3 – LANGUAGES! There are many different languages that are spoken in the United States alone! People bring their native language from culture to America.

SAY HELLO! The international language anywhere you go is a smile! If you ever run into someone who does not speak the language you are speaking, by smiling at them, it shows that you are friendly and are saying hello to them in a non verbal way!
