DEMOCRACY IN PRESCHOOL: C.E.I.P. SANTO CRISTO DE LA VERA CRUZ, SPAIN.

CONTEX Our school is located in Consuegra, in the south of Toledo, in the middle of Spain. It’s a public school. So, all kind of resources come from the government. We teach children from three to twelve years old. As a result, It’s a preschool and Primary school too. The Santo Cristo school is divided into three different buildings. One, in the city center and the rest of them are in the outskirts of the town. There are 145 preschool pupils divided into 6 classrooms. We have diversity of students (from other countries, with some disabilities…) The preechool team is composed of 6 headteachers, a P.E. teacher, and an English teacher.

THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATION

Participation is a fundamental part of citizenship. It is the process by which children and young people can influence decision-making which affects their lives to bring about positive change.

HOW TO DO IT? AREAS OF WORK

CIRCLE TIME & ROUTINES Developing language and social skills is the main aim of this part in our daily schedule. In other words, children can talk about their own experiences, espress their different opinions, make a decision, discuss a topic, etc They need to learn some rules in order to participate properly: listen to your mates, raise your hand, wait your turn patienly and so on.

SPECIAL EVENTS We are celebrating some special events: CHILDREN DAY, 20th of November. Elmer’s book plus activities. SPANISH CONSTITUTION DAY, 6th of December. The right to participation & the right to educatation trouhg folk tales (Little red riding hood, the three little pigs…) PEACE DAY, 30th of January. The last Nobel peace prize: Meeting Malala. INTERNATIONAL FAMILY DAY, 15th of May.

GOLDEN RULES We are going to discuss about some rules in order to be kind to each other, don’t hurt anybody’s feelings, how to say sorry, etc. Visual supports in the classroom.

SOCIAL EMOCIONAL LEARNING SEL, is a process for learning life skills, including how to deal with oneself, others and relationships, and work in an effective manner. In dealing with oneself, SEL helps in recognizing our emotions and learning how to manage those feelings. In dealing with others, SEL helps with developing sympathy and empathy for others, and maintainig positive relationships. SEL also focuses on dealing with a variety of situations in a contructive and ethical manner.

SOCIAL EMOCIONAL LEARNING WRITING POSITIVE MESSAGES TO OUR MATES, TEACHERS, PARENTS…ALL OF THEM WILL BE EXHIBITED IN THE CORRIDOR, HALL, ROOMS. TEXT TO SELF CONNECTION. WE’LL TRY TO CONNECT OUR OWN EXPERIENCIES WITH THE EXPERIENCES OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF A BOOK.
