Using a Fire Extinguisher Be prepared. Fire can spread quickly through a workshop. Know where the fire extinguisher is located or be prepared to exit, as instructed by your teacher. Your teacher may have you practice using the fire extinguisher in your workshop, without actually activating it.

Using a Fire Extinguisher If a fire occurs and you are trained and authorized to use the fire extinguisher: Make sure you have an escape route. To activate the fire extinguisher, hold it firmly and pull out the safety ring. Pick the extinguisher up with one hand, keeping part of that hand on the trigger. Use the other hand to aim the baton.

Using a Fire Extinguisher If a fire occurs and you are trained and authorized to use the fire extinguisher: Aim low, toward the base of the fire. Squeeze the trigger to spray. Spray back and forth across the fire until the fire is out completely.

Using a Fire Extinguisher If a fire occurs and you are trained and authorized to use the fire extinguisher: If the fire is not brought under control immediately or if it spreads, leave the area and call for emergency help.
