Decline of the Roman Empire

After the Decline of Rome... ► The decline of the Roman Empire left Western Europe in a state of chaos:  German tribes continued to invade and conquer areas of Western Europe  Western Europe is left without a stable government and there is no leader.  Poor farmers were left unprotected and at the mercy of violence  People of Western Europe were left with a weak economy and went back to using a barter economy

Dark Ages ► The term Dark Ages refers to the lack of information from the time period (500 A.D. – 800 A.D.). ► Many scholars relate the lack of information to a light of Europe going out.

Middle Ages ► Early Middle Ages – 800 A.D. – 1000 A.D. ► High Middle Ages – 1100 A.D. – 1250 A.D. ► Later Middle Ages – 1250 A.D. – 1450 A.D.

Rise of the Franks ► At the end of the Roman Empire, many of the foreign invaders created their own kingdoms. ► The Franks settled in the region, known as Gaul. Overtime, they created the strongest kingdom in Western Europe.

Government ► Because of the need of protection (due to invasions by Muslims, Vikings, and Magyars) a new political and social order emerged known as feudalism. ► Feudalism is a loosely organized system of rule, in which kings or powerful lords divided their land among lesser lords. In exchange the lesser lords, vassals, pledged their service and loyalty

Feudalism Activity ► Read through the information about feudalism. As you read complete the chart about the different levels of society. ► Please give a good description about each social group.

Economy ► Lords owned large estates known as manors. ► Peasants who lived on the manor farmed the land in exchange for protection. ► The manor was the center of life for everyone. There was no need to leave the manor. Therefore, a barter economy was used on manors, in order for people to get what they needed.

Knighthood ► Many nobles trained from boyhood to become knights. ► Steps to becoming a knight: ► Age of 7 – young boy is sent away to learn how to ride and fight. ► Age of 16 –young boy becomes a squire to get field experience. ► Age of 20 – dubbed as a knight.
