MILITARY DISCIPLINE

Discipline - Meaning Training to ensure proper behavior Order and control Calm controlled behavior Conscious control over lifestyle Punishment

Training to ensure proper behavior The practice or methods of teaching and enforcing acceptable patterns or behavior

Order and Control A controlled orderly state, especially in a class of school children

Calm Controlled Behavior The ability to behave in a controlled and calm way even in a difficult or stressful situation

Conscious Control Over Lifestyle Mental self control used in directing or changing behavior, learning something, or training for something

MILITARY DISCIPLINE Is the mental attitude and state of training which renders obedience and proper conduct instinctive under all conditions. It is founded upon respect for and loyalty to properly constituted authority.

Disciple indicators Smartness of appearance and action Cleanliness of dress, equipment or quarters Respect for seniors Prompt and cheerful obedience by the subordinates of both the letter and spirit of legal orders of their lawful superiors.

Ways to develop military discipline Reward/Awards – are positive incentives in exalting obedience and which is given to deserving personnel. Punishment – is one method of imposing discipline in a command. Teamwork – is an orderly and effective group action brought about by military

Military drills – are primarily means to develop military discipline.

Aspects of Discipline Punishment – penalty Obedience – willing to obey Self-control – the most constructive form of military discipline which involves personal responsibility that goes beyond the threat of punishment or mere obedience.

Climate of Discipline Tough and stressful training High standard of training Channels of communication Loyalty to subordinates Reduction of troop frustration Fair and just rewards/awards or punishment

Purpose of Award and Punishment An award, recognition, commendation and promotion is given to an individual in recognition of his exemplary performance. The award is expected to encourage others to emulate the commendable performance of the person who is recognized.

2. To encourage members to do their duties; When offenders against good order and discipline are punished by the proper authority, such disciplinary actions are accorded for the following reasons: 1. To deter would-be violators from breaking the rules; 2. To encourage members to do their duties;

3. To set an example for others to be reminded of; and 4. To cleanse the organization of undesirables.

Importance of Discipline Mass discipline and morale are essential factors for securing cohesive action and for ensuring that singleness of purpose which alone can triumph over the most difficult conditions of war. The successful leader will teach his men to recognize and face fear because fear is the enemy of

discipline. Fear unchecked will lead to panic and a unit that is panicky is no longer a disciplined one but a mob.

Maintenance of Discipline Discipline is instilled in men through: 1. instruction 2. pride 3. tradition 4. regulations
