The Analysis Begins

Plot your LIBS data, and get a copy of your captured image and download a copy of The Mars Lab Spectral Library. STEP 1

Study your target image. Look at the features of the target and the surrounding environment. What conclusions can you make about your target from the image? How does it contribute to your research question and hypothesis? STEP 2 : Study your target image

Have your LIBS data plot and Element composition table ready. Check that you have the correct scaling on the X and Y axes. *If you need to find out how to plot the graph just follow the Graphing the LIBS Data step by step Powerpoint presentation. STEP 3 : Check LIBS data graph

Compare your graph with the top graph on each page of the library and try to find the best match. STEP 4 : Visually compare spectra ?

Compare your trace elements composition table with those of the library samples. STEP 5 : Compare compositions ?

If you are having trouble finding a suitable match to the top graph, it may help to make a rescaled plot of your data. You use the same data but set the Y axis max to 1x For some samples this new graph may be more revealing. STEP 7 : Consider rescaling your graph Auto scaled Manually scaled

Using the back pages of the Spectral Library as a guide, try to identify some of the component elements present in your target from the spectral peaks. STEP 8 : Identify some elements

Combine all your evidence and research. How does it contribute to your hypothesis? In what ways does it support or negate your research questions. Prepare your scientific report. STEP 9 : In conclusion … ?
