DNR Data for Comprehensive Planning Shannon Fenner, DNR Statewide Land Use Team Leader

DNR’s Geographic Data Overview ä DNR Enterprise Data: ä Support a broad range of business needs throughout DNR and externally ä Managed by Enterprise Data Management section (EDM) of BEITA ä DNR Program Data: ä Developed primarily to fulfill certain regulatory responsibilities or to provide specific customer services ä DNR program data custodians often have different approaches to managing and providing access to their information

Statewide Land Use Team ä Identified data/info for Comprehensive Plans ä Working with Aquatic & Terrestrial Resources Inventory (ATRI) staff ä Land Use web site

Internet Flow Chart INTERNET Smart Growth (Land Use Site) DNR GIS Data Sharing Enterprise Information Technology & Application DNR Geographic Data Enterprise Data Can order GEO Discs that contain many GIS data, some are recommended for the elements Can download DRGs immediately. (digital raster graphics/scanned USGS 24,000 topographic maps) Metadata Other DNR Web sites – Program information and/or data Interactive Maps – Bureau for Remediation and Redevelopment Tracking System: Ice Age National Scenic Trail: m m Natural Heritage Inventory On-line Database edb.htm edb.htm GIS Registry for Closed Remediation Sites htm htm Wisconsin Waters Initiative Dam Safety Database Website: Online Ordering of Maps Wisconsin Wetlands Inventory (fee required): htm htm See URL sheet for Internet URLs for Agencies outside of the DNR. Note: Many of the above web sites have links to one another. List of relevant data both Enterprise and Program List of Comp. Planning Elements Metadata Contains point of contact for Data distribution. Guidance

Available Information DNR Internet ä Land Use Web Page - Under Construction ä ä Element Guidance documents (Coming Soon!) ä Paragraph explaining why the datasets were recommended for each of the specified elements ä One dataset might have different reasons for being important to various elements

Future Trends: Information Distribution ä ArcIMS (Arc Internet Map Server) ä Provides interactive mapping (not data access) through the use of internet explorer ä Ability to view recommended datasets and print pagesize maps ä Advantages: ä Easy to use ä No GIS software needed ä Instant information

Future Trends: Information Distribution ä File Transfer Protocol (FTP site) ä Information put on the server for external download ä Land Use CD ä Recommended datasets on CD to purchase or download the CD and return it

Aquatic and Terrestrial Resources Inventory (ATRI) ATRI Project Lead: Erin Crain ATRI Development Lead: Jeff Shaw

ATRI Vision  ATRI is a public and private partnership to gather, link, and make available data used for decisions affecting Wisconsin’s landscape.

What is it? A web based application designed to facilitate identification, inventory, storage, and distribution of aquatic and terrestrial related data. Currently used as a metadata repository for environmental data ATRI AQUATIC & TERRESTRIAL RESOURCES INVENTORY

Types of Data Found in ATRI ATRI Tables and databases GIS data layers Images Summary reports Web site links Applications Others...?

Inventory Data Model BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES PHYSICAL RESOURCES CULTURAL RESOURCES POLLUTION MONITORING

Sources of Data Found in ATRI ATRI Wisconsin DNR ATRI Partners State and Federal Agencies Others...? Wisconsin State Herbarium UW-Steven’s Point Macroinvertebrate Database WisDOT Public Service Commission of WI WDOAWDOA

Additional Considerations ä Presently available only on DNR’s intranet ä Contains mainly information about data, not data itself ä ATRI is currently under review, which has slowed development

How Can ATRI Help Comprehensive Planning? 1) Data searches facilitated by DNR Staff 2) Decision support tools 3) ArcIMS site - under development
