Period 7 Grammar and usage (1)

Step 1: Homework checking out Check the answers of the assignment given by the teacher last lesson. Page 88 C1. Step 2: Reading Read the 5 points on Page 10, find out the usages of different relative pronouns.

Who /whom/ that / which/whose antecedent peoplethings relative pronouns Who/whom that(less usual) that (less formal) which Whose--possession

What is a sentence made up of? Beckham loves Victoria. subject predicate object

Step 3: Relative pronouns When we talk about people… We use who or that in an attributive clause instead of he / she / they The man – he lives next door – is friendly. The man who lives next door is friendly. She was the teacher – she - taught us. She was the teacher who taught us.

When we talk about things… We use that or which in an attributive clause instead of it / they Jack works for a factory- it makes shoes. Jack works for a factory that makes shoes. The cups – they were broken- hurt his foot. The cups that were broken hurt his feet.

When they are objects… 1. When who is an object, it can be replaced by whom I don ’ t know the teacher who / whom I saw in the computer room. The student who / whom you met at the school gate is from America.

When they are objects… 2. We can leave out who, whom, that, which when they are objects. He liked the gift (that / which) his friends gave him. The girl (who /whom / that)you ’ ve just seen is good at English. Have you found the keys (that / which) you lost?

Whose We use whose in an attributive clause instead of his / her / its / their The girl – her hair is red- is singing. The book – its cover is blue- is mine. The girl whose hair is red is singing. The book whose cover is blue is mine.

Practice 1 Fill in the blanks with proper relative pronouns. 1. Mr Green is the teacher ______ often helps us. 2. The school ______ you can see on the left is one of the oldest buildings in this city. 3. The woman ______ was ill was looked after by her family. 4. She is the girl ______ I met on holiday. 5. They found the car ______ was stolen last month. 6. I met someone ______brother I went to school with. 7. The dog ______ I bought from the pet shop is called Buster. 8. I ’ d like a room ______ window looks out to the sea.

Practice 2 Read the two sentences and then write one sentence with the same meaning. 1. A man answered the phone. He told me you were out. A man who answered the phone told me you were out. 2. This book is about a boy. He ran away from home. 3. I lived in a house. Its windows are all broken. 4. The pictures were missing. They used to hang on the wall. 5. What was the name of the horse? It runs so fast. 6. Do you know the man? His painting won the first prize?

Finish the blank-filling exercise on Page 11, here are some language points: pay attention to… 注意 Please pay attention to every word I say. You paid no attention in class at all!

Please vi., vt. pleased, pleasing 使高兴 ; 使喜欢 ; 取悦 ; 选择;喜欢 I am pleased that you have a new job. 我很高兴你有了一个新工作。 He is pleased with his new job. 他对新工作很满意。 Come and stay as long as you please. 来吧!你喜欢住多久就住多久。

Some more clues about relative pronouns: Which or that can both refer to things, but when the antecedent is modified by words such as very, only, the first, the last, etc. or the antecedent itself is an infinitive like all, everything, nothing or anything, or the antecedent is modified by an ordinal number or a superlative adjective, we usually use that instead of which. e.g. This is the best food that I’ve ever had! There is only one lake that hasn’t been polluted yet. I’ve known everything that I need to know.

Who and that can both refer to people, but when the antecedents are the words like one, ones, anyone, those, or when the sentence is There be… structure, we use who instead of that. There are 5 of us who don’t know the way at all. Anyone who has different ideas may put up your hand. Those who don’t have tickets must leave at once.

That can both refer to people and things, but when the antecedent has both people and things we only use that. The little boy and his dog that you saw just now live in the same neighborhood with us.

Practice 1 Complete the sentences 1. She gives her children the books____ they want. 2. Susan is the only person ____ understand me. 3. This is an awful movie. It ’ s the worst ____ I have ever seen. 4. The dress ____ she bought doesn ’ t fit her well. 5. Are these papers____ you ’ re looking for? 6. I don ’ t like the stories ____ have unhappy endings.

Practice Correct the errors in the sentences. 1) The woman we met her this morning is our new teacher. 2) He lived in the house which door is red. 3) Did you find those pictures were taken in Beijing? 4) He is the only student which can work out the problem.

5) She moved to an old house her parents left it to her. 6) Do you know the girl who often help her classmates? 7) She likes the gifts whose friends gave her. 8) They talked about many things and persons who they remembered.
