CyberSafety on-line protection Your Facebook profile will be deleted as you are not 13 years old!

Please don’t have nightmares. Knowledge is power!

What are we protecting them from? There are a number of key risks to using new technologies, including: Physical danger (including abduction) Physical and mental harm (including lifestyle and socialisation) Sexual abuse, grooming and sexual exploitation Bullying, intimidation and trolling Identity theft Illegal behaviour (including sexting, hate crimes and incitement) Exposure to inappropriate content (sexual, violent, terrorism) Obsessive use of ICT (including freemium misuse) Copyright infringements Digital Dirt (future employment)

The world-wide web of pitfalls

Some startling statistics (11-14y)… 95% online with a mobile device 41% use a webcam daily 58% have more than 200 friends 90% have a social network account 78% said that no-one monitors their internet use

Some startling statistics (11-14y)… 18% access Chatroulette or Omegle (or similar) 11% met someone in real life they met online 3% took someone with them

Cyberbullying… Always use ‘Net-iquette’ at all times Block and report abusive people! Cyberbullying is a hate crime under law. It should be reported to CEOPS or the police. Always let the college know… Griefing and trolling is common (especially on Twitter) The more personal info you give out the more information they can use! 35% received threats or hate 50% have sent hate or threats

Passwords Password or Password Qwerty (or Qwerty7) Name + date of birth (eg Lee310670) Nickname + date of birth (eg Fleaz310670) Dog or cats name (eg Kimi1) Letmein or opensesame or backdoor Abc Access Batman or Batman1 Trustno1 Iloveyou Monkey 90% have the same password for everything Discuss security with them Use 8 characters or more Include capitals, symbols and numbers Different password for each site If you share personal information then people can work out your password Online quizzes trawl for personal information – BEWARE! Phishing and chain s

Online gaming 70% of boys have played GTA 5 Age inappropriate content Voice chat – have you heard it? ‘Clientele’ – Habbo Hotel Freemium ‘Hackmail’ ‘Griefing’ and ‘trolling’ Account theft – Identity theft Addiction

Grooming… Know who your child is ‘virtually’ friendly with - monitor Make sure that they only accept ‘friends’ that they actually know. Explain that people on the internet might not be who they say they are. Watch for the danger signs…

Danger signs of grooming… If the person tries to insist on having your phone number or private address If the person wants to keep their chats with you secret and/or the person shares information with you and tells you not to tell anyone else about it If the person tells you that you will get into trouble if you tell an adult what has been going on If the person s you pictures which make you feel uncomfortable and which you would not want to show to anyone else If the person wants you to them pictures of yourself or use a webcam in a way which makes you feel uncomfortable If the person wants to meet you and tells you not to let anyone know

Digital Dirt… When we go online we leave a digital footprint or fingerprint. People can follow this trail quite easily and it is permanent. We call this a ‘digital tattoo’. What kind of digital tattoo are people leaving on social networks? Who will look at it in the future?

S*xting… This is when you send inappropriate content/images to other people (through IM, text, FB messenger or Snapchat) This can be to a boyfriend or girlfriend It can also be to a ‘groomer’ – blackmail Often leads to ‘revenge p*£n’ S*xting can be a crime Sharing inappropriate images of children is a crime 25% have s*xted 20% have sent a ‘dodgy’ photo

Mr Sheldon’s Top Tips Have a regular conversation about online safety Explore the best of the internet –together! Have no-web Wednesday or No-tech Tuesday (keep to it!) Set rules and boundaries (eg. I want all of your passwords) Explain what you will have to do if they don’t stick to the rules Use parental controls - 3G and 4G don’t go through your web filter Know more than they do – do your research (ignorance is not bliss) 35% of year olds know how to get around security Changes to behaviour (eg secrecy) are a sure sign of problems Use ‘the more you share, the bigger the nightmare’ What goes on the internet stays on the internet – forever!
