An NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center Presentation at the Innovation Summit Wayne M. Zage, Director August 6, 2013 copyright 2013 by the S 2 ERC, all rights reserved

The NSF I/UCRC Model More than 100 Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRCs) have been established by NSF Over 1000 companies have signed the Affiliation Agreement for one or more I/UCRCs An Industrial Advisory Board is involved in project selection and strategic planning

The NSF I/UCRC Model Affiliates have common ownership of the research portfolio NSF ensures high-quality centers by engaging independent professional evaluators to study I/UCRC interactions both qualitatively and quantitatively Model is being considered in other countries

S 2 ERC Mission Statement The mission of the Security and Software Engineering Research Center is to conduct a program of applied and basic research on software security, system security and software technology problems of interest to its members. The goal of this research is to enable security and software technology gains within member organizations.

S 2 ERC Affiliates

NSF Funded S 2 ERC Sites Ball State –Wayne Zage, Director –Dolores Zage, Research Coordinator –Lauren Williams, Administrative Coordinator Iowa State –Tom Daniels, Co-Director –Virginia Anderson, Administrative Assistant Virginia Tech –Charles Clancy, Co-Director –Justus Graham, Site Coordinator – Kellye Richardson, Admin Assistant

S 2 ERC Participating Universities

S 2 ERC Today 55 th semi-annual showcase to be held in Nov Research has evolved over 27 years to include a significant number of security- related projects S 2 ERC funding 29 projects currently Collaborative, customized projects and technology transfer to affiliates are the hallmarks of the S 2 ERC

How Does S 2 ERC Work? Industrial Requests for Proposals (IRFPs) Research Proposals (solicited, unsolicited) Feedback Funds $ Research Results Industry/Gov Universities

Current S 2 ERC Projects Please see handout to review the 17 projects funded through Ball State 1 project funded through Iowa State 11 projects funded through Virginia Tech

S 2 ERC Researchers NSF Career Award winners Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation recipients Numerous editorial appointments Distinguished professors and conference best paper award winners Conference program chairs ACM and IEEE Fellows Patent holders

Benefits to Affiliates Customized research projects tailored to industry needs Technology gap reduced from “17+/- 3” years to “2 to 4” years Lower overhead rates 7-to-1 to a 10-to-1 return on investment technical reports on-site short courses and seminars summer interns, potential employees

S 2 ERC Support NSF, 5-year grant, renewable annually 29 affiliates, including 2 Northrop Grumman and 2 Lockheed Martin sites Double memberships from DHS, ARL, L-3 and Boeing, enhancement funding from AFRL and Raytheon Some affiliates using MIPRs to send membership money thru NSF to S 2 ERC Total support this year: over $1,600,000

Funding Opportunities for I/UCRCs Collaborative Opportunity for Research Between I/UCRCs (CORBI, formerly called TIE program) Fundamental Research Supplement Research Experience for Undergraduate Students (REU) and for Teachers (RET) Fed Government Interagency Exchange of Funds International Collaboration/Projects Supplemental Opportunity for SBIR/STTR Memberships

S 2 ERC Showcase Activities Poster parades Researcher presentations –New proposals based on IAB snapshot voting –Status reports on current projects IAB member presentations Panel presentations Software demonstrations IAB and S 2 ERC administrative meetings
