Presentation transcript:

The Worlds ONLY CORN Palace Mitchell, SD

The original Corn Palace, called "The Corn Belt Exposition" was established in Early settlers displayed the fruits of their harvest on the building exterior in order to prove the fertility of South Dakota soil. There were many settlers of Russian decent who built the Corn Palace.

Nine different varieties of corn are grown and used to create the corn murals annually in Mitchell, SD

The Murals were close to completion in July for the August Festival.

Some 500,000 tourists come from around the nation each year to see the uniquely designed corn murals. The city's first Corn Palace was build as a way to prove to the world that South Dakota had a healthy agricultural climate.

There is a different theme each year. Sometimes they will repeat a theme from a past year.

Different artist create the designs and then volunteers follow the Blue Prints by attaching the cobs of corn. The dried corn cobs are sawed in half length wise to have a flat bottom to attach to the mural. The Corn Palace is considered to be the largest bird feeder in America!
