Exploring CS Through Technovation Challenge

Mission & Vision Our mission is to promote women leadership in technology by giving girls the skills and confidence they need to be successful in computer science and entrepreneurship

Why mobile? We’ve found that smartphone app development is an easy way to engage girls in technology. 77% of girls own a cell phone, and the average teen sends 60 texts each day.

12 weeks of mentorship Girls work in teams of five with the support of a professional woman in tech: their mentor Each team develops a phone app, conducts market research, writes a business plan, and “pitches” their app

What resources are needed to start a Technovation club? Mentor: professional woman in tech/business who visits school each week to help a team of girls develop an app, write business plan, and develop a successful “pitch” to sell their idea Coach: recruits girls, coordinates field trips, supports girls as they build their apps, and provides classroom space after school four hours per week Girls: teams of five girls work in groups to create their project

Technovation Mentors Support girls as they create their apps through a visual, beginner-lever language Inspire girls as they code apps, create companies and, change the face of computer science

Cost and Scalability Technovation Provides: Free 12 week curriculum hosted online Technovation Starter Kit and Resources Virtual Field Trip Video Series Virtual mentor and team matching support Teams Require: Use of a computer Use of a smartphone (optional) Wireless access App Inventor for Android (free)

What is the ideal profile of a Technovation mentor? Desire to learn new things Feel comfortable using a set of lessons that teaches how to program an app and develop a business plan Have interest in motivating and managing a team of willing girls to complete the project

Recruiting a Team Identify a school or girl serving education organization Reach out to leadership and “pitch” the opportunity Use Technovation resources to support your outreach
