Goal Setting

If I could do anything, I would… Create a list of goals you would like to achieve in your life time. You will have 5 minutes to create this list. A minimum of 10 goals (try to come up with more) Think about… –Like to accomplish –Like to become –Like to improve –Qualities you would like to possess

Goals vs. Dreams Goals –An object or end that one strives to attain; aim. Dreams –A fond hope or aspiration.

What are Goals? What we aspire to and plan to accomplish, achieve or attain in our lives. Goals are what we want to be when we grow up. Life is a journey and during each trip we have a destinations.

Why Writing Your Goals is so Important? Important First step towards achieving them. Roadmap to your success Four rules of writing goals down: 1.Write your goals in the positive 2.Write your goals out in complete detail 3.Write in present tense 4.Re-write your goals

SMART It is helpful to define your goals in a “SMART” way. –Specific –Measurable –Attainable –Realistic –Time-bound

Specific Focus our efforts Clearly define what we are going to do What are you going to do? Why is this important to do at this time? How are you going to do it? Specific, clear and easy

Measurable If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Measurable progress, so you can see the change occur. –How will you see when you reach your goal? Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress

Attainable Begin to figure out ways you can make them come true –Develop attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. A goal needs to stretch you slightly so you feel you can do it and it will need a real commitment from you.

Realistic “do-able” Devise a plan or a way of getting there which makes the goal realistic. Too difficult and you set the stage for failure, but too low sends the message that you aren’t very capable. Set the bar high enough for a satisfying achievement!

Time-bound Putting an end point on your goal gives you a clear target to work towards Time must be measurable, attainable and realistic

SMART Goal Timelines Think of your goals as what you want to be, do, or have –In other words, where you want to go. Part of setting SMART goals means they are realistic and attainable Short-term vs. Long-term

Timelines for Goals Short-term –Can be achieved in an hour, a day, or even a week –Things that can be done in a relatively short amount of time Long-term –Take longer to achieve –Not only do they require more time, they generally require more effort –Oftentimes, broken down into several short- term goals. –Short-term goals make achieving long-term goals more manageable

If I could do anything, I would… Categorize your list of goals into a time frame. Goal for Today Goal for next year Goal for the next five years Goal for the next ten years Long- term goal Write a play with my best friend Take an acting class Perform in a school play Get a role in a movie Win an Academy Award Study for my science test Help my friend with cancer study for her test Volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House Get a job in a hospital Discover a cure for cancer
