Types of goals Long-term goals – Longer than one year Can take up to 5 years or more Take several steps to accomplish Great deal of time and effort Short-term goals – Less than a year Can be steps toward the long-term
When working toward a goal… Write it down Have a plan and be specific Monitor progress (journaling)
S.M.A.R.T. Goals S pecific – should answer who what where when and why M easurable – how much, how many or how will I know it is accomplished A ttainable – if you work hard, can you achieve it R ealistic – willing and able to work to reach goal T ime – must set specific time limits for each step
Goals must… Be important to you, personally Be within your power to make it happen through your own actions Be something you have a reasonable chance of achieving Be clearly defined and have a specific plan of action
Incorrect Example I will do better in English. Is it measurable? What about time?
SMART Goal Statement I will increase my grade in English to an A by the end of this term. Make sure to use action verbs: Will rather than I want.
