" Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships." - Michael Jordan

Anticipate! A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be. Wayne Gretzky

Attitude Certainly we're not satisfied with just winning games. We've been playing some pretty good hockey, but we think we can play much better. Mario Lemieux

Goals Winning isn’t everything, wanting to win is everything.

Goal Setting—Take control of your health and fitness See Chapter 3 of Feeling Good, Looking Good

Goal Setting--simplified “Excuse me, Sir”, Alice inquires. “Could you tell me which road to take?” Wisely, the caterpillar asks, “Where are you going?” Somewhat confused, Alice responds, “I don’t know where I am going, Sir.” “Well”, replied the wise caterpillar,” “if you don’t know where you are going, it doesn’t really matter which road you take.” Does this clarify why goal setting is important?

WHAT ARE GOALS? A goal is something that you want to accomplish, a plan you have for your future. It is something specific that you want to accomplish or work towards. Setting goals will help you reach your full potential.

Two Types of Goals LONG TERM GOALS—relatively, take a long time to reach, but can be achieved with the help of short term goals. SHORT TERM GOALS—established to help achieve long term goals, or to help you accomplish something in a short period of time. (days or weeks) Very specific!

What You Need 1.Desire—real motivation (write them down) 2.Belief—you can do it 3.Honesty with yourself (where you are and what obstacles might get in the way) 4.Knowledge—methods to achieve your goals 5.POA—Plan of Action/time line/monitoring

BE “SMART” GOALS SHOULD BE… S—Specific: be exact and detailed M—Measurable: how do you know you achieved it? (I will be doing a follow up) A—Achievable: you can do it and control it. R—Realistic: Do not overrate your talents or underestimate your potential. T—Timely: set a specific deadline.

Why set goals? Goals are an important ingredient of success. They play a major role in the development of individual athletes' skill and in the development overall fitness. This applies to you individual fitness goals! Goal help to motivate you!

Setting Goals  Goals should be realistic and specific. Goals which state that the you will win an Olympic medal may not be realistic It is not realistic to say you are going to bench press 275 pounds 10 times.

Individual Goals Paul Coffey: "Hockey's a funny game. You have to prove yourself every shift, every game. It's not up to anybody else. You have to take pride in yourself."

Individual Goal Example Goal: By November 30 I am going to be able to do 30 push-ups in a row How will I achieve this goal? I am going to do three sets of ten push-ups every day until I can get to a minimum of 30 in my first set.

OUR PAL FOCUS You will be encouraged to set goals with regard to flexibility, cardio vascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, nutrition, weight control See Goal setting hand-out: PAL Goal Setting***

Your Individual Goal Select three fitness goals that you will try to complete within the next 5 weeks.  If you need help or clarification, ask for help. Below each goal, be sure to explain how you plan to achieve these goals. What are you willing to do to make yourself better? Be specific and give lots of detail.

FEEDBACK However, just setting goals is not enough. Your performance won't improve unless you are told how you are doing. I will be following up with each individual to discuss your individual goals, what you are doing to achieve them, and the progress you are making.

Your Individual Goals I will give you 5-6 minutes to review and revise your PAL goal. Let’s quickly review the sheet. We are then going to make your goal very visible! You can then make any necessary changes or alteration before you pass you sheet back to me.

Making Your Goal Visible We are going to take our sheet and go to the gym. You are going to share your goal with at least five of your classmates. You will put their name on the bottom of your paper. I will tell you when to “switch partners” Evaluate each others goals, offer suggestions for improvement, offer suggestions to help them achieve their goal.

Looking Good, Feeling Good Read chapter three (pages 36-50) and make notes of any important goal setting information you can find. You will use these notes to study for your next test/quiz.
