Highly Effective School Library Program Action Plans: What your Action Plan Should Contain

SMART Format Goals are written in SMART format: Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely

School Unified Improvement Plan Goal This goal is taken directly from your School’s UIP. You may cut and paste the goal from your UIP. UIP Goal Example: Increase direct instruction for writing in middle level language arts courses and increase interventions for students who are not at grade level. Clarify our vision and implementation of Response to Intervention building wide. Implement Tier I high leverage effective teaching strategies.

Highly Effective School Library Program Goal Select a goal from the Highly Effective School Library Program Evaluation Rubric that you choose to use to improve your program. Please cut and paste the goal. INSTRUCTION and LEARNING ENVIRONMENT 1. Collaboration Collaboration between the school librarian and faculty is a key indicator of a successful, effective library program. Research has shown the quality and frequency of the collaboration contributes to improving student achievement.

Evidence Outcomes Select the evidence outcome from the Highly Effective School Library Program Competencies Rubric that matches the goal you chose. Please cut and paste the goal. The school librarian plans and collaborates with classroom teachers from many disciplines and grade levels. The school librarian focuses on systematically integrating the 21st century skills of the Colorado Standards by collaboratively planning lessons

Strategies/Indicators In this section, you will write the strategies you plan to use to meet the goal. A common TCAP writing rubric, available electronically, will be used to score all responses. Thoughtful benchmarking will occur among the staff before scoring begins. Students scoring partially proficient and unsatisfactory will receive writing interventions from both the instructional coach and school librarian in small, pull-out sessions. School librarian will instruct staff and students on using collaborative tools such as “Type with Me” and “Meet Up” to improve writing. When teachers engage in collaborative lessons with the school librarian, PEAL paragraphs will be written. The teacher librarian and coach will offer professional development around PEAL paragraphs for staff throughout the semester. This example is taken from the Ken Carl Middle School Action Plan

Partners In this section indicate who is involved in implementing the strategies. School Librarian Principal and Assistant Principal Para-educator Instructional coach Teachers Students. This example is taken from the Ken Carl Middle School Action Plan

Measure(s) of Success Use this section to indicate how you will know if you have met your goal. By February 2013, unsatisfactory and partially proficient students in small pull out intervention sessions will write proficient paragraphs during the school-wide SCRs later in the year. By April 2013 all students will complete four short constructed responses in their AR class. School librarian will post to the library web page at least 8 collaboratively taught writing lessons by April 2013. TCAP- There will be a 2% increase in the median growth percentile for both 7th and 8th grade in Writing. Results out in August 2013. This example is taken from the Ken Carl Middle School Action Plan

Submit Action Plan Once you have completed your Action plan, email it to our H.E. coach, Judy Barnett at barnejm@comcast.net. She will use this information to determine how we can help you with future training or mentoring opportunities.
