Begin with the End in Mind

Do you have a clear picture of where you want to go with your life?

Beginning with the End in Mind means… Thinking beyond today Deciding what direction you want to take Deciding what your values are Coming up with a clear picture of where you want to go with your life 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

You begin with the end in mind each time you: Follow a recipe Plan a party Learn how to play a new video game Draw up a blueprint before you build a house Do extra chores when you want your parents’ permission to do something special with your friends like going to see you favorite band at ACL. 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

Why is it important to have an end in mind? 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

Two reasons: The paths you choose now will determine the number of choices you’ll have later and can affect you forever. If you don’t decide your own future, someone else will do it for you. 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

Before we begin to set goals, let’s answer a few questions in Google Docs. Go to my.austinisd.org Click on Google Apps for Students Go to Google Drive In the upper left corner of the document you will see the words “Untitled Document”. Click on it and rename it. Rename the document, “Beginning with the End in Mind”. Answer the following questions.

1.List 10 things you love to do. It could be gaming, singing, dancing, playing sports, reading, bicycling, cooking, drawing, daydreaming… absolutely anything you love to do. 2.Everyone has one or more talents. Which of the following are you good at (see next slide)? Or write down ones that are not listed. 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

Speaking Writing Dancing Listening Singing Good with numbers Good with words Creative thinking Athletics Music Humorous Sharing Caring for animals Planning events such as parties Sensing needs Mechanical Building things Working with people Memorizing things Decision making Predicting what will happen Making things happen Trivia Accepting others Helping others Cooking 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

3. Now, write down your dreams and aspirations for your future. What does your future look like to you? 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey

Goal-Setting

What’s the difference? Goal According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, “an object or end that one strives to attain” Something you want to accomplish! Wish According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, “to have a longing for; want; desire; crave”

Three types of Goals 1.Short range – things you would like to have happen in the next couple of days, weeks, or months. Ex. – getting straight As on your next 6 weeks report card. 2.Intermediate – things that you would like to accomplish in the next few months to year or two. Ex. – learning to drive. 3. Long-range – those things that you would like to accomplish in the distant future. Ex. - getting into the college of your choice; having a career in the film industry. AVID.org

Think, Pair, Share Think - In your google doc, write down goals for each type of goal category. Pair with your shoulder partner. Share your goals.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

S.M.A.R.T. is: Specific Measureable Attainable Relevant Time bound

Let’s watch an example of how to set SMART goals.

Record in your Google Doc From your list of goals, write: 1 short-term SMART goal 1 Intermediate SMART goal, and 1 Long-Range SMART goal

Homework: Share your Goals list with an adult at home.

All Goals need an Action Plan The GPA of Success

GPA GOAL – what you want to accomplish (something significant & ambitious) PLAN – the path you will take to reach your goal (must include specific details) ACTION – the outline of actual steps you will take to make your plan a reality AVID.org

Let’s practice creating action steps Scenario: You want to make the Murchison football team next year Goal – to make the MMS football team Plan – build more muscle, improve stamina, increase running distance, kick the ball 50 yards, and throw the ball 60 yards with accuracy. Action steps – Lift weights three times a week. Run at least 2 – 5 miles daily Do 100 push ups and sit ups daily Go to the field after school and watch the Murchison team go through their routine. Practice conditioning drills on my own. Practice kicking the ball two to three times a week. Practice throwing the ball two to three times a week. Maintain a positive, can do attitude. Eat healthy, maintain a good weight. Get plenty of rest.
