Endorsements Will qualify for at least one HS and one MG Grades 9 – 12 –English Language Arts: English, Journalism, Language Arts, Speech (MG=Language Arts) –Mathematics: Mathematics (MG=Mathematics) –Science: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, Environmental Science, Physics (MG=General Science or Biological and/or Physical Science) Can teach ALL sciences at introductory level Must be endorsed in subsequent designation to teach AP or honors courses

Endorsements Grades 9 – 12 –Social Science: History, Psychology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology (MG = Social Science) Your designation is History. Can teach ALL social sciences at introductory level Must be endorsed in subsequent designation to teach AP or honors courses

Endorsements High School endorsements out of major –Can acquire at initial certification or later Later = additional fee Requirements vary depending on endorsement Typically 24 hours upper-level Some exceptions – Science/Social Science/ESL Check Council website

Endorsements Middle grade endorsements (grades 6-8) –Broad based –Typically 18 hours in subject –Exceptions: math/ESL (CI/DEIL) –State needs: math, science, foreign language, ESL

Endorsements Foreign language –9-12, 6-8, 5-8, K-4 –9-12: 20 hours minimum + pass content test –6-8: 18 hours –K-4 & 5-8: 18 hours + pass APT for elementary or K- 12 –Recommend passing content test for any foreign language endorsement (HQ) –Limited test dates for Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Japanese, Korean, Russian

Certificate Secondary: 6-12 Initial  Must renew every 4 fiscal years  Fiscal year July 1 – June 30  Citizenship or legally present to work and signed statement agreeing to become a citizen within 10 years. Standard  4 years teaching experience on an Initial certificate and have completed ISBE approved professional development options.

Testing No tests first year of program Appropriate content-area test –Take Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 Allow for a fall-back date APT Grades 6-12 –Wait until Spring 2012

New ISBE Rules Effective February 1, 2012 –No professional education or content course grade lower than a ‘C’ can be used toward certification, endorsement, or approval –No professional education or content course taken for CR/NC can be used toward certification, endorsement or approval –High school endorsements that require 24 hours at least 12 hours must be at upper-level

New ISBE Rules Effective February 1, 2012 –Social Science and Science endorsements To be endorsed in a subsequent designation in the field you must have completed 12 hours of coursework in the subject area of the designation and pass the applicable content-area test (AP/Honors) Social Science (History, Psychology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology) Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, Environmental Science, Physics)

Reminder Criminal Background Checks are being done on April 20 & 21 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. You must take the form to 505 E. Green Street, Suite 203 PRIOR to April 12, 2010 to schedule an appointment.
