visual devices by bradders and compton CRT Monitor A monitor displays text and image data passed to it by the computer. A cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitor is the type that has been around for years and is large and boxy. CRT monitors are heavy and they take up a lot of desk space. They have largely been replaced by flat-screen monitors. However some are still used in the design industry since the colour accuracy and brightness of CRT monitors is excellent, and designers need to see true-to-life colours. Also, CRT monitors are generally cheaper than flat-screen monitors. Flat-Screen Monitor (TFT or LCD) Over the past few years, as they have come down in price, flat-screen displays have replaced CRT monitors. Flat-screen monitors are light in weight and they take up very little desk space. Modern flat-screen monitors have a picture quality that is as good as CRT monitors.

Keyboard Types There are three main types of Keyboards: Alphanumeric Keyboard Numeric Keypad PIN Pad Charlotte and Grace!

This keyboard allows you to type letters, numbers and symbols into your computer. An example of an alphanumeric keyboard is a QWERTY keyboard. Alphanumeric Keyboard

This is a small keyboard that has numbers only. These are used to enter numeric data into computers such as ones at cash machines. On the right hand side of most computer keyboards there is a numeric keypad, and mobile phones have numeric keypads for entering phone numbers etc. Numeric Keypad

This device has a numeric keypad and is used to enter a persons Personal Identity Numer (PIN). These are used, for example, when someone is paying for something with a credit card. PIN pads are also found on electronic door locks; you enter a PIN to unlock the door. PIN Pad

Emad and Max Pointing devices Mouse The mouse is a hand held device that lets you point to and select items on your screen. In a PC mouse there are mostly 2-3 buttons, and on a Mac there is one. The mouse used to work with a ball underneath to detect movement. However, now infra-red sensors are used. Trackball The trackball is an upside-down mouse that stays still on your desk. It has the same principle as the mouse except that the rollers are reversed and the ball is on top. This ball does not need as much attention as the normal mouse because the only thing that touches your hand, as the normal mouse touches a surface. Touch Pad The touchpad has sensors that sense your touch. When they sense your touch they send a signal to the computer to move the mouse pointer to that spot on the screen.

Pen The pen can be used as a normal mouse (without wires connected to it) or also as a free flowing drawing device. The pen is useful for drawing since drawing graphics with a mouse tends to be fairly difficult. Emad and Max More Pointing devices Touch Screen The touch screen lets the user touch the area to be activated by using the finger or hand. Light pen The light pen system allows the user to touch the computer screen with a lighted pen to activate commands and make selections.

sensors and Readers By Fin and Ben A normal pc has no telling what is going on around it, but we use our senses, as a normal pc has no senses we have to plug things in to give it some senses. A sensor measures a specific property data and sends a signal to the computer. Usually this is an analogue signal so it needs to be converted into digital data for the computer to process. This is done using by anAnalogue-to-Digital Converter. There are two types of card readers a magnetic strip reader data is stored through magnetised dots (usually credit cards), there is also smart card/'chip' reader which is for modern credit cards as they have a small chip in them which has computer memory in. Data is stored and then read back win chipped in. sensors magnetic strip reader smart card

Jorge and James Reading Text/Codes All types of information can be input via a keyboard. However for some things it would be a slow and long process and mistakes would be made. An example of when it would take a long time to input information is with: Bank cheque codes Multiple choice forms Lottery number forms Barcodes There is technology that can read marks and codes in an instant. Click to see the different types of equiment that can read text and code.

MICR reader Used by banks and similar companies to read cheques and alike quickly and efficiently so they go into a computer OMR scanner An OMR scanner is used to mark or intake the answers from a multiple choice questionare or exam. A good example of an OMR scanner is the lottery ticket checker. OPTICAL MARK RECOGNITION MAGNETIC INK CHARACTER RECOGNITION

OCR Scanner An OCR scanner converts images of text into an actual text file. You can scan in a page of a book or any section of writing and it will recognise the characters. This means that you can then edit the text on the computer. OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION Barcode Reader/Scanner This is one of the most obvious scanners because you see it most times you go to a shop. The barcode is just a numeric code represented by a series of lines. It is much easier just to scan the barcode rather than typing the code using a keyboard. It is also more accurate.

Grace PB + Charlotte Remote Controls Infra-Red remote controls Lots of controls have infra-red in them. Some examples of controls with infra-red in them are: television controls, wireless computer gaming controls and wireless mouses.

Infra-Red remote controls How does Infra-red work? When you select the command that you want the controller to do, the controller then emitts a series of light pulses via the light emmiting diode. Then the equipment the controller is sending the information to, detects the light beams with the equipments own infra-red reciever built into the equipment. Then the reciever interprets the beams and performs the requested command. An example command is if you want to change channel on your Television, then you press the button and the beams emitted tell the telivision to change the channel.
