しんかんせん At least 10 different kinds of shinkansen in Japan. Tokaido/ Sanyo Shinkansen connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka together. Runs about 300 km/h. The first shinkansen line and the world’s first high speed train service in Kyushu Shinkansen connecting Yatsushiro with Kagoshima. Done in March Northern Shinkansen, the Tohoku shinkansen from Tokyo to Morioka and the Joetsu Shinkansen to Niigate were completed in 1982.

ひかり »Means “light” »The original shinkansen service on the Tokaido/ Sanyo line. »Takes about three hours to travel from Tokyo to Osaka. »Two Hikari trains per hour.

のぞみ »Means “hope” »The fastest bullet train in Japan. »Takes about 2.5 hours between Tokyo and Osaka. »Only make major stops at Nagoya, Kyoto, Okayama, Hiroshima.

こだま »Local version of the Shinkansen. »Makes all primary and secondary stops. »Is not suitable for long distances. »Fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
