Presentation transcript:

WHAT IS PIVATS? A school-based assessment instrument based on the performance criteria published by the DfES and QCA known as the P scales and National Curriculum Level descriptors A system to inform target setting for pupils of all ages whose performance is outside national expectations

WHAT IS PIVATS? A system to complement and work alongside statutory assessment for children working from level P1 to L4 An approach that may be used annually, as a baseline assessment or as a yearly measurement of added value

BENEFITS OF USING PIVATS Celebrate the attainment of pupils whose performance is not always recognized and valued Help schools demonstrate the value they add to pupils of all abilities Support schools in their self-evaluation processes

WHO IS PIVATS FOR? Pupils who attend mainstream primary or secondary or special schools, short stay schools, learning support units or resourced provision. Pupils who may be out of school as a result of exclusion, medical needs or school phobia.

WHAT DOES PIVATS DO? It supports inclusion It promotes value-added measurement It promotes school self-evaluation and improvement It develops individual, cohort, subject and year group profiles of performance for monitoring, comparative and target- setting purposes

Data Analysis through the PIVATS web-site There are two PIVATS web-sites General information about PIVATS: PIVATS data analysis service:

PIVATS STRUCTURE SCIENCE [P1(i) to P8 and levels 1 to 4] –scientific enquiry –life processes and living things –materials and their properties –physical processes

To do an assessment “best fit” the sample of work to the National Curriculum Level Look for which of the performance indicators can be evidenced Score as Level then letter (‘e’ = 1 indicator and ‘a’ = 5 indicators). Information for various aspects should be entered on Individual Pupil Profile (IPP).

Don’t “play fast and loose” with the performance indicators or you will end up “in a pickle.”
