Ascot Heath CE Junior School Assessment without levels

Why change from levels? They were based on the old curriculum They were based on the old curriculum “Crucially, [national levels] failed to give parents clarity over how their children were performing and also resulted in a lack of trust between primary and secondary schools – clogging up the education system with undependable data on pupil attainment.” Nick Gibb 26 th Feb 2015 “Crucially, [national levels] failed to give parents clarity over how their children were performing and also resulted in a lack of trust between primary and secondary schools – clogging up the education system with undependable data on pupil attainment.” Nick Gibb 26 th Feb 2015 They encouraged ‘racing through learning’ They encouraged ‘racing through learning’

Government Guidance ‘By removing levels we will allow teachers greater flexibility in the way that they plan and assess pupils’ learning.’ *National curriculum and assessment from September 2014: information for schools ‘By removing levels we will allow teachers greater flexibility in the way that they plan and assess pupils’ learning.’ *National curriculum and assessment from September 2014: information for schools “We will help schools develop their own, more accurate assessment systems that truly show how a child is performing in the classroom.” Nick Gibb 25 th Feb 2015 “We will help schools develop their own, more accurate assessment systems that truly show how a child is performing in the classroom.” Nick Gibb 25 th Feb 2015

Implications for us? We need to ensure that we have a secure system that meet Government guidelines We need to ensure that we have a secure system that meet Government guidelines We want to make best use of our Tracking system We want to make best use of our Tracking system Assessment should be at the heart of planning and teaching Assessment should be at the heart of planning and teaching We want to be able to report more frequently, and in more detail, to parents We want to be able to report more frequently, and in more detail, to parents

What should assessment do for us? Assessment Directly link to individual and whole-class performance targets Provide stakeholders (children, teachers and parents) with a clear ‘next step’ Inform planning and enable targeted Teaching and Increased challenge

Golden Codes Meet the recommendations from the DFE statement on National Curriculum assessment tracking Meet the recommendations from the DFE statement on National Curriculum assessment tracking Will identify a child’s progress against the curriculum objectives Will identify a child’s progress against the curriculum objectives SPTO generates a code based on this progress such as ‘Y4 High’ or ‘Y5 Mid’ SPTO generates a code based on this progress such as ‘Y4 High’ or ‘Y5 Mid’

What do Golden Codes mean? Golden Codes Year 3 Low Year 3 Mid Year 3 High Year 4 Low Year 4 Mid Tracking Point Level2B2A3C3C3C+ APS Children appear to be moving at a slower speed than previously The new curriculum involves studying objectives in far greater depth The problem with levels was unnatural acceleration of children

What are the expectations of progress within a year? End of Autumn End of Spring End of Summer Golden Code Year 3 Low Year 3 Mid Year 3 High Tracking Point

How are we assessing children? All assessment judgements made against curriculum objectives Staff make a professional judgement Evidence is uploaded/referenced to support this judgement This generates a ‘Golden Code’ The ‘Golden Code’ is based on judgements entered on a day to day basis SPTO automatically generates the code using its own, standardised, systems

What does this mean for me? There will no longer be a one-off test every half term There will no longer be a one-off test every half term I will no longer receive a level to indicate my child’s achievement I will no longer receive a level to indicate my child’s achievement I will be able to access my child’s report as often as I like

What is the online report? Every parent will have their own, unique login ensuring total security Every parent will have their own, unique login ensuring total security Your child’s learning journey captured online Your child’s learning journey captured online Records of achievement and assessment Records of achievement and assessment Teacher comments Teacher comments Targets Targets

How is my child’s data kept safe? Complex passwords are generated randomly as is the case for any secure website Complex passwords are generated randomly as is the case for any secure website Data is transferred as a code through Becta standard security levels of encryption Data is transferred as a code through Becta standard security levels of encryption The password will only access one child’s data The password will only access one child’s data You will never see other children’s data or averages You will never see other children’s data or averages

So, the children won’t do any tests? Once a year, in the summer term, they will completed a ‘scaled’ assessment to validate the data Once a year, in the summer term, they will completed a ‘scaled’ assessment to validate the data Assessments will still be used as and when the teacher deems it to be good practice Assessments will still be used as and when the teacher deems it to be good practice Children will sit tests in Year 6 as before Children will sit tests in Year 6 as before

How will this impact on the delivery of learning in school? Teachers will be planning using a new system that identifies objectives in need of attention Teachers will be planning using a new system that identifies objectives in need of attention They have a table to show coverage They have a table to show coverage They can set targets on SPTO and generate target walls They can set targets on SPTO and generate target walls They can assess in lessons using SPTO mobile app for iPad They can assess in lessons using SPTO mobile app for iPad
