Progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals Case Study - India

MDG’s and India India compared to most nations in Asia, has made very slow progress in eradicating poverty over the period of 10 years, according to a report in The country has lagged behind in bringing infant mortality and maternal mortality rates down during the decade significantly. However it has made progress in bringing down tuberculosis prevalence rate and HIV prevalence rates.

MDG’s and India In 2009, it was reported that there has only been a 3% drop in extreme poverty rates (from 42% to 39%.) Southern Asia has achieved its target of cutting in half the proportion of people without access to clean water, but is lagging behind in providing access to safe sanitation with 580 million people still without sanitation.

MDG’s and India There has been an 11% increase in primary school enrolment. Despite the gains for girls’ school enrolment, southern Asian women remain at a huge disadvantage. Only 19% of paid jobs in the region are held by women. Maternal health also remains dismal. In 2009 the death rate of children born to South Asian mothers was 7-11%.
