Make a Choice Joshua Injustice Idolatry God is faithful You must make the choice

Joshua 20 Then the L ORD said to Joshua: 2 “Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses, 3 so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.

4 “When he flees to one of these cities, he is to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state his case before the elders of that city. Then they are to admit him into their city and give him a place to live with them.

5 If the avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the one accused, because he killed his neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought.

Cities of refuge God is concerned with injustice God is concerned with physical well-being He wants to protect us from undo harm

Joshua 21 Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel 2 at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, “The L ORD commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.”

Why provide land for the priest? Because God was also concerned about their spiritual lives Therefore the priest were scattered throughout the twelve tribes

The L ORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers 43 So the L ORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their fore- fathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. 44 The L ORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers.

45 …Not one of all the L ORD ’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.

This is the first reminder that God has been faithful It is Joshua’s way of preparing the people for his upcoming speech

Joshua 22 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh 2 and said to them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the L ORD commanded, and you have obeyed me in everything I commanded.

10 When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half- tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

16 “The whole assembly of the L ORD says: ‘How could you break faith with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the L ORD and build yourselves an altar in rebellion against him now?

with the whole community of Israel 18 … “ ‘If you rebel against the L ORD today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel.

You are not taking us down with you! We are all in “one boat” When faith is seen as a national process, then we are likely to compel everyone to believe exactly like us We are willing to war with each other

24 “No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the L ORD, the God of Israel? 25 The L ORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the L ORD.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the L ORD.

28 “And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the L ORD ’s altar, which our fathers built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’

Idolatry is taken very seriously Idolatry has been their downfall They do not want God’s wrath This is a shift We begin to see that all visual aids are not idols Now, representation or images are not necessarily idols

Joshua 23 do not invoke the names of their gods 7 Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. 8 But you are to hold fast to the L ORD your God, as you have until now.

13 …Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the L ORD your God has given you.

Inter-racial marriage is forbidden But on what grounds? Not color or culture or language On matters of faith They will turn you to their gods

The L ORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations the L ORD your God fights for you, just as he promised 9 “The L ORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. 10 One of you routs a thousand, because the L ORD your God fights for you, just as he promised. 11 So be very careful to love the L ORD your God.

not one of all the good promises the L ORD your God gave you has failedEvery promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed 14 “Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the L ORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.

Again the people are reminded, God… Delivered them to the promised land Has done His part Kept His promises Has not failed them

Joshua 24 2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the L ORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.

God protected you God has been faithful God has kept his word You are in the land! Remember how dependable God has been to you

Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the L ORD choose for yourselves 14 “Now fear the L ORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the L ORD. 15 But if serving the L ORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my household, we will serve the L ORD.”

Why is Joshua asking the people to trust God? Because some do not! Because they still worship other gods Because they are not convinced Joshua says, choose – consciously

If you forsake the L ORD and serve foreign gods 19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the L ORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20 If you forsake the L ORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”

21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the L ORD.” 31 Israel served the L ORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the L ORD had done for Israel.

Putting it all together God still cares about our physical state of being We are not just spirit and the body is not a useless appendage We are to take care of this body and ask God for it’s healing

Putting it all together God wants us to be faithful. Why? He wants us to reap the rewards of a life lived by faith The best possible life here on earth By faith we claim God’s promise of everlasting life in heaven

Putting it all together God is faithful; it is His nature He keeps his promises God will keep his word Why do bad things happen? Because we have choice

God is our protector God has been faithful We must choose It can not be our parents choice It can not be a decision based on popularity or comfort or tradition Choose God because He is!
