ICEL Living Between Why and Now Exodus 5:1-23 ICEL 12 June 2011

ICEL Living Between As Christians, we often live between the promise and the fulfillment. We live between our calling and our ministry. We wait, and that ’ s hard enough. But what about when things get worse? Why must we wait?

ICEL Moses Prepares to See Pharaoh God tells Moses to return now to Egypt, “ for all the men who wanted to kill you are dead ” (4:19). Moses asks permission from his father-in-law to return to Egypt (4:18). He takes his wife Zipporah and his sons by donkey to Egypt (4:20). Moses takes the staff of God in his hand (4:20).

ICEL God ’ s Preparation God tells Moses to perform miracles before Pharaoh. God warns Moses that it will not be easy. Apparently Moses doesn ’ t fully understand the price that will be paid …

ICEL The Beginning Moses and Aaron meet with the elders of the Israelites. They tell the Israelites what God has said. They perform the miracles God gave them. And the Israelites believed. “ And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped ” (4:31).

ICEL Scripture text: 1Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘ Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert. ’” 2.Pharaoh said, “ Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go. ” Exodus 5:1-23

ICEL Confrontation (1) The God of Israel tells Pharaoh to release the slaves. The slave God, Yahweh, is telling Horus, the falcon god, the son of and the incarnation of Ra, to “ let my people go. ” Egypt is the mightiest country in the world; Israel is a group of slaves.

ICEL Confrontation (2) So Pharaoh asks the seminal question: “ Who is the LORD, that I should obey Him? ” The entire exodus from Egypt is a lesson to Pharaoh and to Egypt about this God of the slaves.

ICEL Scripture text: 3Then they said, “ The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword. ” 4But the king of Egypt said, “ Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work! ” 5Then Pharaoh said, “ Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working. ” Exodus 5:3-9 (1)

ICEL Scripture text: 6That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: 7 “ You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don ’ t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘ Let us go and sacrifice to our God. ’ Exodus 5:3-9 (2)

ICEL Scripture text: 9Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies. ” Exodus 5:3-9 (3)

ICEL A Stony Reply (1) After his triumphant declaration — Let my people go! — Moses asks with a plea. Perhaps Moses was taken back by Pharaoh ’ s stony response. “ Let us take a three-day journey … to offer sacrifices to … our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword ” (5:3).

ICEL A Stony Reply (2) Pharaoh says that the slaves are “ lazy. ” He says this twice: to the slave drivers and to the foremen (5:8, 17). Israel is already numerous. Why would he give them any free time to become more numerous? So he says, “ Get back to your work! ”

ICEL Scripture text: 10Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, “ This is what Pharaoh says: ‘ I will not give you any more straw. 11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all. ’” 12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “ Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw. ” Exodus 5:10-18 (1)

ICEL Scripture text: 14The Israelitie foremen appointed by Pharaoh ’ s slave drivers were beaten and were asked, “ Why didn ’ t you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before? ” 15Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: “ Why have you treated your servants this way? 16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘ Make bricks! ’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people. ” Exodus 5:10-18 (2)

ICEL Scripture text: 17Pharaoh said, “ Lazy, that ’ s what you are — lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘ Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD. ’ 18Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks. ” Exodus 5:10-18 (3)

ICEL Disaster (1) The work is made harder. Now Israel must find its own straw. This was a disaster. Pharaoh is undercutting Moses ’ influence with the Israelites. Now they won ’ t pay attention to Moses ’ “ lies. ”

ICEL Disaster (2) The Israelite foremen appeal to Pharaoh and complain against Pharoah ’ s servants. Your servants (the Israelites) are being mistreated — they ’ re not receiving straw. Your servants (the foremen) are being beaten. The fault lies with Pharaoh ’ s own people (the Egyptians)

ICEL Disaster (3) Pharaoh answers with an accusation: “ Lazy, that ’ s what you are — lazy! ” Then he separates the foremen from Moses and Aaron. “ That is why you keep saying, ‘ Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD. ’ Now get to work. ”

ICEL Scripture text: 19The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, “ You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day. ” 20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21and they said, “ May the Lord look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us. ” Exodus 3:19-21

ICEL Opposition Moses and Aaron were waiting outside to see what Pharaoh would say. What a disappointment! The situation had degenerated, Pharaoh refused to budge, and now Moses was being blamed! We expect opposition from enemies — but from friends?

ICEL Scripture text: 22Moses returned to the Lord and said, “ O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? 23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all. ” 1Then the Lord said to Moses, “ Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country. ” Exodus 5:22-6:1

ICEL Questions 1 Why are you troubling Israel? Why have you sent me? Why haven ’ t you rescued Israel? But things were happening just as God had said they would. Before Moses had stood before Pharaoh, God had said …

ICEL Scripture text: 21The Lord said to Moses, “ When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 22Then say to Pharaoh, ‘ This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23and I told you, “ Let my son go, so he may worship me. ” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son. ’” Exodus 4:21-23

ICEL God ’ s Timeframe God has a timeframe that is much longer than Moses ’ timeframe. God would teach the son of Ra that these slaves (plural) are His “ firstborn son. ” Pharaoh ’ s refusal to recognize God ’ s son (i.e. Israel) will result in the death of his own firstborn son (i.e. the crown prince of Egypt).

ICEL Between “ Why? ” and “ Now ” Moses finds himself in the “ whys. ” “ Why have you brought trouble upon this people? ” “ Why have you sent me? ” But God is about to answer: “ Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. ”

ICEL Waiting (1) “ No good deed goes unpunished. ” Opposition is normal for Christians. Jesus said, “ In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. ” (John 16:33)

ICEL Waiting (2) Sometimes the way is unclear. We find ourselves between the call and God ’ s provision. Opposition arises and we ’ re tempted to give up. But God ’ s deliverance is just around the corner.

ICEL Scripture text: 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “ Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. ” 6So when they met together, they asked him, “ Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? ” Acts 1:6-11 (1)

ICEL Scripture text: 7He said to them: “ It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. ” 9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Acts 1:6-11 (2)

ICEL Scripture text: 10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11Men of Galilee, ” they said, “ why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. ” Acts 1:6-11 (3)

ICEL Waiting (3) Between the resurrection and Pentecost, the disciples found themselves waiting. Waiting on the restoration of Israel. Waiting on the promised power. Waiting on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Waiting …

ICEL Scripture text: 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like a blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4

ICEL Waiting (4) To be witnesses in a hostile world the disciples needed power. That power arrived as a Person in the Third Person of Deity — the Holy Spirit.

ICEL God ’ s Plan God has a plan, and we fit into it somehow. But like Moses and the disciples, we have to wait between God ’ s call Our obedience Opposition (from enemies and friends) and God ’ s deliverance.

ICEL Making It Personal Where are you today? Do you find yourself between the “ why ” and the now? Confession: That ’ s where I am today. Hold on. Be faithful. We will see God ’ s mighty delivering hand.
