WARM-UP The product of a number and five is increased by four and decreased by seven, then increase by ten for a result of the sum of fifty and seven. Translate ( write an expression ) and solve it! 5x + 4 – = X = 10 5x + 4 – = 57

Let’s Practice Translating

Do you know how many turtles I have? The product of three and that number is increased by seven and decreased by six for a result of sixteen. How many turtles do I have? 3x + 7 – 6 = 16 X = 5

Seven is increased by the product of 9 and a number, then decreased by four, for a result thirty x – 4 = 30 X = 3

The sum of eight and four is decreased by six and increased by a magic number. The result is ninety-six. What is the magic number? – 6 + x = 96 X = 90

A magic number is increased by the difference of nine and six. The result is the sum of eight and five. X + 9 – 6 = X + 9 – 6 = 13 X = 10

I purchased four presents for Mr. Segerson because he is my favorite teacher of all time. The first present costs $7. The second one costs $4.00. The fourth one costs $5. I spent a total of $22. How much did the third present cost? $7 + $4 + x + $5 = $22 X = $6

I purchased three presents for Mr. Segerson because he is my favorite teacher of all time. The first present costs $3.50. The second one costs $9.00. I spent a total of $15. How much did the third present cost? $3.5 + $9 + x = $15 X = $2.50

I fell in a cactus and have a bunch of thorns in me. How many thorns? Well, the number of thorns is increased by five, decreased by two, increased by 21 and increased by 8 for a result of forty. How many thorns do I have? x + 5 – = 40 X = 8

My mom said she would give me $4 for every “A” I earned throughout my entire 6 th grade year. At the end of the year, she had to give me $88. Write and expression using “a” for the number of A’s I earned. How many A’s did I earn? 4a = $88 a = 22 So I earned 22 A’s

My dad said he would give me $8 for every goal I scored in soccer. He also wouId give $50 if I got on the All-Star team…which I did! At the end of the year, she had to give me $178. Write and expression using “g” for the number of goals I scored. How many goals did I score? 8g + 50 = $178 g = 16 So I scored 16 goals

A little girl down the street hit me a bunch of times. How many times did she hit me? Well the product of that number and 12 is increased by four and decreased by twenty for a result of twenty. How many times did she hit me? 12x + 4 – 20 = 20 X = 3

I earned five dollars for each hour I worked washing Mr. Segerson’s laundry. Use “H” for the hours. Write an expression and then solve it – if I earned $ H = $35 H = 7 So I worked seven hours.

I earned 9 dollars for each hour I worked in Mr. Segerson’s yard mowing and trimming. I also got an extra $10 for picking up his dog’s poop. Use “H” for the hours. Write an expression and then solve it – if I earned $ H + 10 = $64 H = 6 So I worked 6 hours.

I worked in Mr. Segerson’s garage for five hours. He paid me by the hour. I also got an extra $30 because I got bit by a rat and he felt sorry for me. Use “D” for dollars. Write an expression and then solve it – if I earned $ D + 30 = $64 D = $8.00 So I earn $8 per hour.
